When Tesla Motors unveiled the Tesla Model 3 on March 31st, 2016, the whole world was watching with the eagerness of Apple revealing a new iPhone. However, there is another manufacturer that may have already beaten Tesla to the punch – Chevrolet. As Tesla noted, the Model 3 will have a starting price tag of $35,000 and will offer a driving range of 215 miles. Nonetheless, Tesla’s Model 3 isn’t expected to hit markets until mid-2017 and it may face other delays.
Chevrolet’s solution in offering a mass-market electric vehicle is known as the Bolt EV. The new 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV will enter production by the end of 2016 and will offer a driving range of more than 200 miles on a full charge. That’s a pretty impressive turnaround time for a car that was introduced as a concept only a year ago.
The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV is powered by a single electric motor that gets its power from a 60 kWh battery that comes with an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty. The system makes a total of 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. That allows it to go from 0 to 30 mph in 2.9 seconds and 0 to 60 mph in less than 7 seconds. Top speed comes in at 91 mph. Chevrolet says that the charge times for the 2017 Bolt EV come in at two hours when using a 240V output and 90 miles in 30 minutes when using the SAE Combo DC Fast Charge system. You can fully charge the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV in just 9 hours from a 240V charger.
The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV is able to carry five passengers with second-row legroom coming in at an impressive 36.5 inches. It also offers impressive cargo volume for a vehicle in this segment with a total of 16.9 cubic feet.
Standard tech features on the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV include a 10.2-inch diagonal center display screen and an 8-inch diagonal driver cluster. Besides housing the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, the 10.2-inch display also houses other information like battery levels, range estimation, charge settings and climate controls in an awesome ‘flip-board style’ operation. The system also allows drivers to access Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Optionally, you can equip your 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV with 4G LTE WiFi and a host of advanced safety features including a surround vision camera, blind-spot alert, rear cross alert, forward collision warning, and forward pedestrian alert.
