Volkswagen Could Put 15 Million Electric Cars on the Road

It’s no secret that electric cars are the future. Right now, they’re still relatively rare, but even a cursory glance at the news shows that the biggest names in business are working hard to bring them to the masses. That fact was made even more clear this morning, when Volkswagen told Reuters that its new MEB platform could put 15 million green machines on the road.

While the report was very brief, it also indicated that VW is putting its money where its mouth is, and will be dumping $12.5 billion toward the initiative.

For fans of retro-styled VWs, that’s great news, as one of the first products in the new electric lineup will be the reincarnation of the Microbus, dubbed the I.D. Buzz.  Now, we think the company did a great job when they unveiled the new Beetle two decades ago. That said, bringing back the beloved bus presents styling challenges the Beetle didn’t.

Most importantly, safety standards are light years beyond what they were when the bus first bowed, and now, it’s frowned upon for driver’s legs to serve as a crumple zone. So we’re extremely excited by how well the I.D. Buzz concept keeps the overall proportions of the iconic ’60s hippie mobile intact.

It’ll be a couple years before you start seeing the all these new electric cars at your local AutoNation Volkswagen dealer, but if you’ve been looking for a reincarnated bus, the wait is almost over!
