Trucks are more advanced than they’ve ever been, and in the transition from bare-bones workhorses to daily drivers, they’ve gained plenty of interesting and useful features. Case in point, the tailgate on the 2019 RAM 1500. It’s a pretty trick design which — similar to 60/40 rear seats — is split slightly off center.
In the spirit of versatility, it can be opened from either side, or folded straight down, like a conventional unit.
Importantly, the fancy tailgate doesn’t have any impact on the truck’s load rating, as it retains the 2000-pound capacity of the standard unit. While trucks featuring it aren’t in showrooms quite yet, it’ll be available for all models in the 1500 line as a $995 option starting this spring. The pictured step will also be available, as a separate $295 upgrade.
We’ve already gotten to check out a couple versions of the 2019 RAM 1500, and found the beefy pickup worthy of high praise. Here’s what AutoNation Drive contributor Derek Shiekhi had to say about his week with the RAM 1500 Limited 4×4:
You really can have it all in this truck. I know. I spent a week in it and racked up hundreds of miles driving around Austin and San Antonio, Texas. It had all the handsome styling, power, ground clearance, and capabilities you’d expect from a truck, plus all the high-quality materials and many of the features you’d expect to find in a luxury sedan.
He also enjoyed the week he spent with the RAM 1500 Laramie Longhorn, and while none of our writers have gotten to check out the new 2500 Heavy Duty just yet, we’re all kind of blown away by it’s 1000 lb-feet of torque. Have things in the truck world gotten crazy or what?
