Lotus Cars’ founder Colin Chapman famously ran his company by one simple philosophy: “Simplify, then add lightness.”

It’s taken some years – decades really – for Mr. Chapman’s words to be embraced by the industry, but today many automakers “add lightness” to their cars as a means of bettering handling and acceleration, and/or achieving higher fuel economy figures.

Like an obsessive dieter, vehicle manufacturers are always finding new and unique ways to cut weight from their products. Steel has become the carbohydrates of the industry, and exotic materials, like carbon fiber and aluminum, are the new norm.
