There’s been a big change in Toyota’s lineup, because with the introduction of the Corolla Hybrid, Toyota has decided to phase out the Prius c. At this point, it’s not known where the fuel-sipping Corolla will be priced in relation to the most-affordable Prius, which comes in at just $21,530, but a few other things are clear.
Namely, the Corolla Hybrid will be bigger, have more power, and with an EPA-rated 52 mpg score, it’ll be even more fuel efficient than the outgoing Prius. That’s an impressive improvement, surely, and while it’s better than the Prius c’s 46 mpg rating, we think there’s a significant number of buyers who’ll prefer the Corolla’s more conventional styling.
Because the Prius c was marketed — the “c” stands for city — as a bare-bones grocery getter, and we expect the Corolla to feel more refined.
Motivation will come from a 1.8-liter inline-four cylinder mated to an electric motor, which will provide the Corolla with a total of 121 horsepower. Aside from the drivetrain, changes from the gas model are minimal, and include unique 15-inch wheels, along with a display in the gauge cluster to monitor performance of the hybrid system. One thing buyers are sure to appreciate is that Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0 comes standard on the Corolla Hybrid, and includes cutting-edge tech like a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
While we think the lines of the standard Corolla look great, we think the hatch looks even better, and found it to be a fun, well-balanced machine in our recent review. So we’re keeping our fingers crossed the hybrid drivetrain becomes available in that body style soon. Since it’s already on the market overseas, we think bringing it here is a no-brainer for Toyota.
Of course, while Toyota’s hybrid offerings might have changed, one thing that hasn’t is the variety of its lineup.
