Modern Icon: 2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara

With each new Wrangler generation, Jeep accomplishes what many deem to be impossible — make meaningful changes and refinements while not disturbing the true essence of this legendary vehicle.

For its sophomore year, the all-new Wrangler builds upon its unbeatable off-road capability with enhanced safety features, like adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning, and still holds the title as most-recognized vehicle in the world.

The task of innovating while staying true to the original means poring over details, so let’s take a closer look at this new generation of iconic SUVs with the help of our 2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara test model.

Riding the wave of success from last year’s ground-up redesign, the Wrangler continues to offer a modern look while leaving no doubt of its origins.

The body-on-frame design and Jeep’s signature elements — keystone-shaped grille, fold-down windshield, round headlamps, removable doors, and more — make their return on what is arguably America’s most-loved and iconic SUV.

And by enhancing the right elements, the 2019 Wrangler is more aerodynamic than ever thanks to an optimized windshield rake along with a lowered beltline and wider stance. Larger side windows provide better outward visibility, and if you want the ultimate unobstructed view while off-roading, the front windshield folds down quickly and easily via a new four bolt design.

Our Wrangler test model came painted in an eye-catching color named “Hellayella,” set against 18-inch polished wheels with tech gray spokes and a Premium Black Sunrider Soft Top. An available LED Lighting Group replaces the standard bulbs of the headlamps, fog lamps, tail lamps, and daytime running lamps for a touch of “techie” styling.

All four doors can be removed by a single person now, since the interior armrest also acts as a gripping point, allowing you to reach through the window space and easily lift the door off its hinges. Soft top operation is also less headache-inducing (no more curved zipper paths!). Once the side and rear windows are removed and stored, the black Sunrider roof can be folded back in varying degrees of openness.

The passenger space for the 2019 Wrangler can be summed up in three words: details, details, details. Okay, so that was the same word three times, but that’s just how impactful every design element is when it comes to delivering the signature Jeep experience.

From the cabin layout to material choice to operation, it’s clear that the Wrangler is here to enhance an active lifestyle without making too many concessions in terms of comfort or accessibility. Keeping with tradition, the Wrangler comes standard with removable carpet and a wash-out interior, making it easy to hose off any dirt or debris that may have made its way inside during your adventure. A new one-way floor drain valve lets you get back to business in record time.

Rugged details are important, but so are comfort and convenience. Our test model came equipped with optional leather-trimmed seats featuring the Sahara logo, as well as an upgraded 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C infotainment system with premium audio. This award-winning user interface is still one of our favorites, and now features high-definition graphics and improved response. 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, GPS navigation, satellite radio, and active noise cancellation are just a few of the benefits afforded by this advanced technology.

Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto are now standard, which allows you to access your favorite music and apps from your smartphone. Simply connect your device to one of the many USB ports and use the UConnect interface, steering wheel buttons, or voice prompts to control an additional layer of connectivity.

For the driver, a customizable 7-inch LED display inside the instrument cluster provides all kinds of information about the vehicle, settings, entertainment, or current operation. There are over 100 ways to display what’s most important, like navigation, tire pressures, drivetrain behavior, and much more.

2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara Performance

Under the hood of our 2019 Wrangler test model is an all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that is offered as an upgrade over the standard 3.6L Pentastar V6.

This peppy motor delivers 270 horsepower with 295 lb-ft of torque, and also features an eTorque Mild Hybrid System to further enhance fuel efficiency and make smarter use of its power. What that means for the driver is extra low-end torque, smoother shifts, and quicker launches thanks to an electric boost from the eTorque technology.

These enhancements are all part of a larger quest to make the Wrangler easier to drive — gone are the days when it felt like we were driving a school bus. Everything that the driver touches has been redesigned to require less effort to operate, from throttle inputs to 4×4 activation to gear selection. And all of this was achieved with zero compromises to the vehicle’s off-road prowess.

Every Wrangler is certified as Trail Rated by Jeep, meaning it’s able to withstand harsh conditions and tough terrain thanks to best-in-class capabilities like water fording, high ground clearance, and incredible wheel articulation, to name a few. Our test model came equipped with the optional Selec-Trac 4×4 System that automatically switches between two-wheel and four-wheel drive so you’ll always have the best grip as you transition from clear roads to mud.

Even on the toughest terrain, the Wrangler Unlimited Sahara felt effortless to drive, using its low-range differential and gearing to confidently maneuver past large moguls with precision and control. We were consistently surprised by the vehicle’s stubbornness — in moments when normal SUVs would have stalled, the Wrangler kept its composure without the need for dramatic driver inputs. The off-road performance is so good that it makes most challenging courses feel like a cakewalk.

Fuel economy for the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara is an EPA estimated 22 mpg city and 24 mpg highway** when equipped with the 2.0-liter engine and 8-speed automatic transmission.

Our test model’s optional Customer Preferred Package rounds out the safety suite with advanced preventative measures that include a rear park assist system, blind-spot and cross-path detection, adaptive cruise control, advanced brake assist, and full-speed forward collision warning.
