The S-Class stands as a shining example of everything a luxury car can be, and the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS is going to set the same high bar in the SUV segment.
Now, it’s true that Rolls-Royce and Bentley have released SUVs in recent years — and it’s not like those vehicles are are lacking in luxury. But the fact of the matter is, the sales numbers aren’t going to come anywhere close to what we’ll see from the GLS, just like you see far more examples of the S-Class than you do Phantoms and Flying Spurs.
And anyone who’s drive them all will tell you the S-Class is hardly outgunned in comparison, even if they are more “common.”
The first models to hit showrooms will be the GLS450 and GLS580. The GLS450 will feature a 3.0-liter twin-turbo I6, good for 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, while the GLS580 will get a more robust 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, packing 483 horsepower and a whopping 516 lb-ft of torque.
According Mercedes, both will come with a mild hybrid system to add low-end grunt, and each will be able to accomplish the zero-to-sprint in less than six seconds. Because Mercedes never really pulls punches when it comes to motivation, industry insiders expect an even more powerful version will arrive later, and incorporate a plug-in hybrid system.
The cabin will be as opulent — hot-stone massaging seats, anyone? — as the S-Class, which should tell you everything you need to know about its accommodations. But we’ll make sure to get our hands on one pronto, so we can tell you about all the creature comforts firsthand.
At this point, no pricing has been announced, but expect well-optioned models to crest the 100k mark.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS will arrive at your local AutoNation-affiliated Mercedes-Benz dealer before the end of the year. So if you’re looking to get your hands on one of the world’s most luxurious SUVs, head over and reserve yours today!
