J.D. Power Names Ford Ranger as Best Mid-Size Pickup for 2019

The Ford Ranger has been a hit with fans and the auto press, but it’s just won over another key demographic — the folks at J.D. Power. Because the venerable rating company just named it the best mid-size pickup in its 2019 Initial Quality Study, where it beat out competitors like the Toyota Tacoma and Chevy Colorado.

Given the reams of positive press it’s received, the Ranger wasn’t exactly hurting for praise before J.D. Power weighed in, but the news is sure to provide peace of mind to buyers considering trucks in the red-hot mid-size segment. That said? We’d really like to see the company bring the version of the Ranger Raptor available overseas to our shores, as we can’t imagine it would be anything but a runaway hit.

That said? The AutoNation Drive scribes that have gotten to test the Ranger have hardly found it lacking for power or capability.

Here’s what Derek Shiekhi had to say about his time with the 2019 Ford Ranger, which he took out to his dad’s property outside Austin in Texas.

Ford uses a one-size-fits-all approach for the Ranger’s engine, no matter what you do with the truck. All Rangers have a turbocharged, direct-injection 2.3-liter EcoBoost I4 under their hood. That’s connected to a 10-speed automatic. Output is 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers are as good on the road as they are on paper. The Ranger had more than enough power whenever I needed to pass another vehicle or just felt like putting my right foot down hard.

So while we might be pining — as we generally do — for a hot rod model, the current engine is ready to handle anything you can throw at it. For Derek’s full review, along with pictures of the Ranger getting doing some real-world work, head over here.

Fortunately, while the Ranger has been a hit across the board, the Blue Oval has managed to keep up with demand, so your local AutoNation Ford dealer has plenty of examples ready to test drive.

So if you’re looking to experience this great addition to the mid-size truck segment, pay them a visit today and arrange a test drive!
