At the beginning of the year, Ford’s President of Global Markets announced that an electric F-150 is coming. And now, we’ve learned that the company has made a $500-million investment in electric truck startup Rivian. From where we stand? We think that could mean we see an electric F-150 sooner rather than later.
There weren’t a lot of details in the announcement, but it’s expected that Ford will seek to use Rivian’s skateboard platform as the basis for its first electric pickups. The move comes as Volkswagen is stepping up it electric vehicle efforts, with its ambitious Mobility Electric Drive Matrix architecture, which promises a previously unseen level of custom vehicle options.
Given the Rivian still plans to offer vehicles under its own name, the big question is how Ford will distinguish its trucks from the company’s homegrown models, and at this point, we don’t have any solid answers. That said, it stands to reason there are plenty of customers who’d simply feel more comfortable buying a truck from an established company like Ford.
As far as the current generation of Ford trucks goes, we’ve had the opportunity to test the Raptor, along with the Platinum Edition, and the fully-loaded King Ranch models, and we’ve found them all to be great trucks worth of the legendary F-150 nameplate — and we expect an electric version to be a true game changer.
Of course, while an electric F-150 is still a little ways out, your local AutoNation Ford dealer is fully stocked with all the flavors of the F-150. If you’re looking some something slightly smaller, they’ve also got the all-new Ranger on hand, so all your bases are covered. So stop by for a test drive today!
