Need more confirmation vehicles cars are the future? Well, this recent revelation from Ford president of global markets Jim Farley should convince you. As out friends at the Detroit Free Press reported, during an appearance at the recent Deutsche Bank Global Automotive Conference, Farley was perfectly clear: “We’re going to be electrifying the F-Series — battery electric and hybrid.” So yup, and electric F-150 is coming.
The Blue Oval shook the automotive world when it announced that it was going to drop all traditional cars, save the Mustang, from its lineup last year. And since the F-150 is responsible for the lion’s share of the company’s revenue, we can’t imagine the engineers are going to come to the electric pickup fight out gunned.
At this point, the electric pickup field is wide open, because while Tesla has talked about the possibility of an electric pickup, and startup venture Rivian has unveiled one. Truck buyers currently don’t have an option if they’re looking to plunk down their cash for an emissions-free rig. That said, neither of those companies have anywhere near the cred in the pickup market as Ford does, so just this announcement means they’re already playing catch up.
Obviously, this is a bold move for Ford, but in the long run, making it to market first, not to mention cutting any potential competition off at the knees, is likely a winning strategy. The electric pickup competition is also likely to spur some exciting innovation, and we can’t wait to see where the engineers take it. Will they go for a super-future look? Or not rock the boat and make it so you have to lift the hood to know an F-150 is electric. We’d guess the answer will be somewhere in the middle — and we can’t wait for details.
While the electric F-150 might be a little ways off, your local AutoNation Ford dealer stocked with every flavor of the Blue Oval’s iconic truck. So if you’re looking for a new pickup, swing by and take a look at everything they have to offer!
