When the new generation of Ford’s factory trophy truck debuted, there wasn’t a lot to complain about for off-road fans. But one thing that a lot of enthusiasts have been vocal about? They want a V8 Raptor. And according to a new report from our friends over at Ford Authority, they may just get their wish.
Now, that’s not to say that the current V6 EcoBoost mill doesn’t have plenty of grunt. After all, it has 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. Even in this era of crazy horsepower, that’s nothing to sneeze at. That said, folks who’ve been paying attention to the performance truck scene know that the engineers at Ma Mopar, who never saw a chassis that wouldn’t be improved by psychotic amounts of horsepower, are dropping the Hellcat engine into the RAM Rebel TRX.
So apparently, after owning the high-performance truck segment of late, the Blue Oval doesn’t feel like being overshadowed.
To compete with the RAM, our friends over at the Ford-Trucks forum have helpfully pointed out that Ford has a couple of engines that would fit the bill nicely. The most obvious choices are the 5.2-liter V8 set to see service in the new GT500, or a supercharged version of the 5.0-liter in the Mustang GT. If cresting 700 horsepower is the goal, both would be great choices.
There are also rumors that Ford could choose to use the 7.3-liter mill from the Super Duty. With all that displacement and some forced induction, it’s also a great candidate to power any ferocious Raptor. And given how well the folks at Ford have done with making the Raptor an absolute beast off road, we’re sure that whatever engine they choose, it’ll ensure Ford remains a ferocious competitor in the segment.
While there’s still plenty of speculation happening here, we’re already looking forward to a shootout between these two off-road bruisers. Which one will come out on top is anyone’s guess. But one thing we’re sure of? They’ll both be massive hits when they arrive at your local AutoNation dealer. We’ll obviously be following this story closely, so stay tuned for more info!
