Final Run: the Ford GT Wants to Win Again at LeMans

Even if you’re not a died-in-the-wool fan of sports car racing, you might be aware that the Ford GT has a fantastic history at the 24 Hours of LeMans.

That’s because over the last couple of weeks, the trailer for the forthcoming film Ford vs. Ferrari has been lapping the internet at a blistering pace. Starring Christian Bale as driver Ken Miles, and Matt Damon as legendary American car designer Carroll Shelby, it’s the story of how after a business deal gone bad, Ford sought to end Ferrari’s era of dominance at the grueling endurance race back in the ’60s. Given the level of talent on board, it’s sure to be an awesome flick, and we can’t wait to see it.

That said, it’s not the end of the story for the Ford GT program in France, as the latest generation of Ford’s supercar was also designed and built to win at LeMans. And win it did, in 2016 and 2018. Now, Ford has announced that this year will be its final factory effort at the storied race, and we’re crossing our fingers it takes the checkered flag again.

For a behind the scenes look at the campaign’s drama, and the joy of victory, watch the teaser video below. It’s a great appetizer for this year’s contest.

Unfortunately, even if you have the boatload of cash it requires to take delivery of a Ford GT, nabbing one of the extremely limited production supercars is next to impossible for mere mortals. But fortunately, your local AutoNation Ford dealer does have plenty of fire-breathing Mustangs just waiting to find a good home — and unless you’re a champion racer, getting to the edge of their performance limits isn’t likely.

The 87th running of the 24 Hours of LeMans will commence Saturday, June 15th at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Check with your local cable provider on how to watch.
