As we mentioned in our last week’s Face-off Friday, the compact crossover segment keeps heating up with new additions every year and luxury automakers seem to be taking advantage in hopes to grab a piece of the pie. With that in mind, this week we decided to take a look at two new luxury compact crossovers on the market from Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.
The Lexus NX hit markets in late 2014 as an entry-level crossover that fits below the RX in the brand’s lineup. In the grand scheme of things under the Toyota umbrella, the Lexus NX sits on the same structure and wheelbase as the Toyota RAV4, however, the styling, suspension, engines, and interior are everything you would expect from Lexus. In the United States, the Lexus NX is available as a 200t gasoline version and a 300h hybrid version.
The Mercedes-Benz GLA made its world debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and began rolling out to markets in late 2014 to early 2015. The model sits below the current GLK (the GLK will soon be rebadged the GLC) in the luxury brand’s lineup and targets the younger shopper with an active lifestyle. The model is based on the same platform as the entry-level Mercedes-Benz CLA and shares most of the interior with the sedan. In the United States, the Mercedes-Benz GLA is available as a GLA250 and a high-performance version badged the AMG GLA45. A diesel option is also being considered for the United States at a later date.
Both models offer unique exterior styling cues along with a luxurious interior that can be fully optioned out with everything you’ve come to expect from a luxury crossover. Both have also been priced competitively to attract new shoppers to the brand. Both Mercedes-Benz and Lexus have seen success from the compact crossover segment, which also offers other models from competitors including the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Lincoln MKC and others.
For the sake of our Face-off Friday, we are going to focus on the Lexus NX 200t and the Mercedes-Benz GLA250. Let’s have a look.
