Face-off Friday: 2016 Ford Escape vs 2016 Mazda CX-5

The Ford Escape and the Mazda CX-5 are two of the best compact crossovers currently on the market – however if you look at history, the two are somewhat related.

The Ford Escape originally made its debut back in 2000 and ever since Ford has produced three generations of the crossover. Ford released the original model as 2001 model year that was actually co-developed and launched with Mazda, which Ford owned a significant stake of. The two were sold side by side-by-side with the Mazda version being called the Tribute.

Almost a decade later, things fell apart in Ford and Mazda’s business relationship and the Tribute ended production in late 2011. Ford went on to sell the Escape for a third-generation by deriving it from its Kuga crossover from Europe – leaving Mazda to figure out its own plan.

In 2012, Mazda came out with its own compact crossover called the CX-5, which has been widely successful and the car that will go head-to-head in today’s Face-off Friday with the Ford Escape. Let’s have a look!

Note: For the sake of our Face-off Friday, we are going to pin the Ford Escape 1.6 liter EcoBoost against the equally comparable 2.5 liter Mazda CX-5.
