AutoNation First Look: 2016 Volvo XC90

Originally introduced in 2002, the Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury crossover utility vehicle. Marking the second-generation of this popular Volvo model, the all-new 2016 Volvo XC90 is ready to take on the crossover segment with full force.

The 2016 Volvo XC90 launches a new era for Volvo, courtesy of a new design language, an outstanding and luxurious interior, a new range of technologies and an all-new platform known as the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA).

“This is one of the most important days in our history. We are not just launching a car, but re-launching our brand. This day marks a new era for our company. The XC90 paves the way for a portfolio of exciting new cars to come in the following years,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car Group.

The all-new 2016 Volvo XC90 launches the latest design direction for the nearly 90-year-old brand. The new face of Volvo is highlighted by the T-shaped LED daytime running lights, a prominent grille and a sharper version of Volvo’s classic logo.

The 2016 Volvo XC90 is longer, wider and rides higher than the outgoing model, and according to designers the new SPA platform gave them the ability to take the design beyond their expectations. The XC90’s sharp front end and shapely rear shoulders gives the luxury crossover utility vehicle a very muscular stance that helps the 2016 Volvo XC90 stand out from the competition.

The all-new 2016 Volvo XC90 is available with two major exterior styling packages: the Urban Luxury Package and the Rugged Luxury Package.

The Urban Luxury Package mixes a color-coordinated body kit with polished stainless steel details. Coupled with 21-inch polished wheels, the Urban Luxury Package offers 2016 Volvo XC90 buyers a timeless and classy look. Meanwhile, the Rugged Luxury Package adds matte black exterior trim, stainless steel skid plates, running boards, integrated exhaust pipes and big 22-inch wheels.

No matter the package, the 2016 Volvo XC90 will be sure to turn heads everywhere it goes.

The Interior of the 2016 Volvo XC90 goes above and beyond anything else Volvo has offered in the past. Every detail in the 2016 Volvo XC90 has been carefully crafted to offer what the brand calls “the epitome of Scandinavian luxury.”

Right off the bat, buyers’ eyes will notice the tablet-like screen located in the center of the dashboard. Known as the Volvo Sensus infotainment system, the state-of-the-art system consists of a 9-inch touchscreen display that controls almost every infotainment function in the 2016 Volvo XC90. This includes the XC90’s standard navigation system, climate control, audio controls, vehicle settings, Bluetooth phone settings and information, and much more. The Volvo Sensus infotainment system is extremely intuitive and very easy to use. It starts with the Home Screen, which hosts crucial information for navigation, climate, phone and audio systems. From there, users can swipe the screen left to display a panel of vehicle settings, and swipe right to display a panel of audio sources and other connected apps. The Volvo Sensus infotainment system is also one of the first systems to offer Apple CarPlay connectivity.

The 2016 Volvo XC90 is available in three trim levels: Inscription, Momentum and R-Design. All trim levels offer a range of luxurious interior materials including soft leather trim, wood decor, and diamond-cut controls for the XC90’s start/stop and volume switches.

With three rows of seats and space for seven passenger, Volvo made sure that even the third-row could fit passengers as tall as 5 feet 7 inches.

The 2016 Volvo XC90 is available with two powertrain choices that are defined under two model levels: T6 and T8, the latter of which is a plug-in hybrid. All 2016 Volvo XC90 models come with all-wheel drive, and a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine that is both supercharged and turbocharged.

In the Volvo XC90 T6, the 4-cylinder engine offers 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, the Volvo XC90 T6 has the ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph. On the fuel economy front, the Volvo T6 offers EPA-rated fuel economy figures of 20/25 MPG (city/highway).

The Volvo XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid is powered by the same basic 2.0 liter 4-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged engine; however, it also adds electric power to produce a combined output of 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. All this power pushes the 2016 Volvo XC90 T8 from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, although top speed remains 130 mph. Measured in MPGe (miles-per-gallon equivalent), the 2016 Volvo XC90 T8 manages an incredible 59 MPGe in the city. All 2016 Volvo XC90 models sport a ride quality that is comfortable and smooth.

The 2016 Volvo XC90 also features a number of innovative safety systems, including Lane Detection and Lane Keep Assist, Blind-View Monitoring, Cross Traffic Alert, Surround View Camera, Adaptive Cruise Control and Crash Warning.

The 2016 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD Momentum carries a starting price of $48,900 (MSRP), while the 2016 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD Inscription starts at $54,500 (MSRP). Moving to the racy 2016 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD R-Design results in a starting price of $52,900 (MSRP).

Volvo has yet to price the XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid. Available later in the year, we fully expect the 2016 Volvo XC90 T8 to be the best value in the XC90 lineup thanks to its quick acceleration and terrific fuel economy; however, we’re confident that no matter the 2016 Volvo XC90 model and trim you choose, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the luxury and technology Volvo has put in its stylish and comfortable crossover utility vehicle.
