The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio is an SUV with 505 horsepower, a sub four-second zero-to-60 time, and handling manners that are more suited to a race track then a Home Depot parking lot. Only the Italians could have made a vehicle like this. And while some of you might be saying, “Uh… what about Porsche, BMW or Mercedes-Benz?” The fact is that the Alfa could’ve only been made by the German’s if they lived on wine and had a much more developed sense of humor.

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio AWD Exterior
If you were to quickly glance at the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, the odds of you guessing that it had a top speed of over 175 mph might be slim. After all, this is a SUV, not a sports car or super sedan, which is why it’s so surprising that the shape you see here is more capable then the average person would ever guess. Look closely, and you’ll start to see things that not only separate the Stelvio from other offerings on the market, but that may also tip you off to what lies beneath that curvy bodywork. The sculpted hood, for instance, employs slotted vents to aid with heat extraction. Then there are the air intakes in the lower front fascia that direct airflow over some of the Stelvio’s many internal coolers. Beautiful Bi-Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights are also present and help to frame Alfa’s signature grille.
The body lines themselves are soft, employing few harsh angles, and instead, focus on smooth contours that help to aid in airflow around the vehicle. This can be seen in the use of subtle fender flares which help accentuate the staggered 20”x9” and 20”x10” dark five-hole aluminum wheels running 255/45-series tires up front and 285/45-series out back. Free of roof rails (although they are an option), the Stelvio employs a long raked rear window, integrated roof spoiler, LED taillights and polished quad-tipped exhaust ports along with a blacked-out lower diffusor. These design elements, along with that Trofeo White paint, help the Stelvio Quadrifoglio achieve an elegant, yet bulldoggish demeanor that performance enthusiast will love.
2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio AWD Interior
With a price tag of $85,890** it goes without saying that our tester came pretty maxed out. We’re talking about materials such as double-stitched leather, alcantara, and carbon fiber, as well as soft touch materials throughout the cabin. Then there are the ultra-supportive and power-adjustable heated sport seats, the Harman/Kardon sound system, and a cluster that thankfully still utilizes analog gauges.
Truth be told, the center console itself is a bit underwhelming, but there’s a simplicity to it that many folks will appreciate. Located at the base of the gear selector are three rotary knobs that allow one to toggle between suspension settings, the infotainment system, and media center volume. Situated directly in front are the basic HVAC controls, along with standard 12v and USB power ports.
Having a driver-centric interior in a vehicle that’s meant to haul the family around is a bit odd. Then again, there aren’t too many family haulers that will lap the Nürburgring in 7:51.7 (a new record for a production SUVs). For those unaware, this is where the DNA of Alfa comes into play. You see even though the Stelvio offers up to 56.5 cubic-feet of cargo and will tow up to 3,000-pounds, it was first and foremost meant to be driven. Is it luxurious? Sure, but with a confident emphasis on sport. Is it useful? Absolutely, but this is not an SUV that’s meant to go camping. Instead, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio has a cabin that’s better suited to being flogged around at your favorite raceway or twisty road than on an off-tarmac excursion.
2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio AWD Performance
Performance SUVs have been around for quite some time. That’s why when Alfa decided to release the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, sports car people stopped and took notice. Out of the gate it’s quick – really quick. We’re talking about a sub-four second zero-to-60 time, a top speed of over 175 mph, and a ¼-mile time under 12.5 seconds.
The reason it’s so good is because it shares much of its underpinnings with the Giulia Quadrifoglio, its sedan sibling. The engine, for instance is the same 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged 24-valve V6 that makes 505 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. Then there’s the chassis control system with its four modes (Advanced Efficiency, Natural, Dynamic and Race) and the eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Our Stelvio came with large Brembo brakes covering steel rotors (six-piston front / four-piston rear), but carbon ceramics available as an $8,000 option.
On the road the Stelvio feels just like a sports sedan, but with a little more girth, given its 4,350 curb weight. The ride, even in Natural Mode is somewhat stiff, but in no way harsh. Dynamic and Race do stiffen things up a bit, with Race shutting off all the “keep you safe” nannies. Power delivery is linear in the way it builds and rewards one with a satisfying “BRAAAP” when upshifting. The steering is arguably the best in the business, and after a few minutes of ripping down your favorite twisty roads you’ll be yearning for a racetrack, because yup, it’s that much fun to drive.
2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio AWD Safety
With airbags throughout the cabin, backup camera, Q4 all-wheel drive, anti-lock brakes and stability control, along with a host of other safety features, the 2018 Stelvio Quadrifoglio ensures that you will arrive to your destination safe and sound.
