There is no doubt that wagons are seen as a niche segment in the U.S. market as SUVs and crossovers continue their dominance over American hearts. However, we can’t deny that we have a soft spot in our hearts for wagons and Volvo wagons in particular.
We were – and still are – in love with the V90 and the V90 Cross Country so you can imagine my excitement when we found out we were going to be spending some time in the new 2019 Volvo V60. Now, Volvo is offering the V60 in the U.S. market as a special-order-only vehicle and that’s because it knows it won’t sell many. Nonetheless, Volvo without wagons is like Audis without quattro. On top of that, the new 2019 Volvo V60 our first look at the S60 sedan.
2019 Volvo V60 T6 AWD Inscription Exterior
Volvo currently has one of the best exterior designs when it comes to luxury brands. It’s an ideal blend of elegance, aggressiveness, and presence. Based on the Volvo S60, the Volvo V60 carries the brand’s new attractive exterior design elements including the ‘Thor Hammer’ LED headlights, the bold new grille, and the ‘Iron Mark’ VOLVO lettering on the back. When it comes to overall design, there’s not much difference between the Volvo V60 and the V90.
Size wise, the 2019 Volvo V60 sits on a wheelbase that measures 113.1-inches with an overall length of 187.4-inches. The width stretches a total of 80.3-inches and the height stands at 56.4-inches. Now, you’re probably wondering why we’re comparing the Volvo V60 to wagons that are larger in size but in the United States, we have a very limited selection of wagons so we really have no choice. Nonetheless, when you break down the actual length of these wagons, you’ll notice that the Volvo V60 sits right in the middle, but is obviously closer to the likes of the Audi A4 allroad and the BMW 3-Series Sport Wagon.
2019 Volvo V60 T6 AWD Inscription Interior
Like the exterior of its lineup, Volvo strikes the perfect balance between elegance, comfort, tech, and overall luxury on the inside.
The 2019 Volvo V60 T6 AWD Inscription model we test drove here comes with all the bells and whistles including a panoramic roof, four-zone climate control, heated front seats, 12.3-inch driver display, Bluetooth, range of USB ports, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, navigation, and a range of driver assist tech. My test model also came with the $2,200 Luxury Package that adds ventilated seats and a massage function. It also had the $750 package that adds a heated steering and heated rear seats. By far our favorite feature is the $3,200 Bowers and Wilkins sound system which is still one of the best currently available sound systems we’ve experienced in any car. As equipped, my test model carries a price tag of over $60,000.
When it comes to interior dimensions of the Volvo V60, it is pretty surprising to see that legroom is very similar to the larger V90. Front legroom for both comes in at 42-inches while rear legroom comes in at 35.2-inches for the V60 and 35.9-inches for the V90. Cargo capacity is where you’ll see the biggest difference where the V60 offers a maximum 50.9 ft³ and the V90 offers 71.3 ft³.
2019 Volvo V60 T6 AWD Inscription Performance
Power for the 2019 Volvo V60 T6 AWD comes from a 2.0L four-cylinder turbocharged and supercharged engine making 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that helps it go from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. Average fuel economy comes in at 21/31 mpg* (city/highway).
While the German competitors in the segment offer everything from 4-cylinders to V6s, V8s, and even V12s – Volvo has opted to stick to a full 4-banger lineup. Nonetheless, Volvo has managed to extract as much as power as possible from its turbo and supercharged 4-cylinders so you won’t really feel left out when it comes to performance.
When it comes to being a daily driver, the Volvo V60 T6 offers a truly satisfying experience. Acceleration is quick, handling is sharp, and cabin noise is minimal. Drivers have the ability to switch driving modes between Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, and Individual for their preferred style of driving.
