Limited Edition: 2019 Subaru WRX Series.Gray Test Drive

Because making one of the most enthusiast-friendly sports sedans wasn’t already enough, Subaru is giving us even more reasons to be excited thanks to the debut of the all-new Series.Gray limited edition WRX model.

This rare trim features performance upgrades, unique styling elements, and a series-exclusive color that’s guaranteed to stand out from the crowd.

Collectors will undoubtedly be scooping up these cars, but should it also be on your short list for new vehicles to consider? Let’s take a closer look with the help of our 2019 Subaru WRX Series.Gray test model.

2019 Subaru WRX Series.Gray Exterior

Subaru’s WRX is easily one of the most recognizable sports sedans, thanks to its rally-inspired design which features a pronounced hood scoop, flared fenders, and stylish aerodynamic components.

And new for the 2019 model year, the WRX is attracting even more attention with a very special Series.Gray edition. Limited to only 750 units, the WRX Series.Gray offers an exclusive Cool Gray Khaki paint with Crystal Black Silica badging, black-finished wheels, and LED steering-responsive headlights with matching LED fog lights.

The Series.Gray exterior paint gives off a soft blue tint, and is by far one of the most stunning and attractive colors we’ve seen on a car in a long time. Since this rare trim is based on the WRX Premium model, it comes standard with additional and upgraded components that include 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, summer performance tires, front and rear underspoilers, rear diffusers, and a low-profile trunk spoiler, to name a few.

Our test model also came equipped with the optional Performance Package (only available on vehicles with a 6-speed manual transmission), which deletes the moonroof for weight-savings, and adds red-painted brake calipers featuring JURID front brake pads along with a sharkfin antenna and black mirror caps.

With the special Cool Gray Khaki color and the WRX’s signature performance features, the 2019 Series.Gray is a definite head-turner, even for casual automotive enthusiasts.

2019 Subaru WRX Series.Gray Interior

Consistent with Subaru’s other models, the 2019 WRX Series.Gray’s comfortable and spacious interior offers both thoughtful functionality and advanced technology.

What immediately caught our eye was the new STARLINK 7.0” Multimedia Plus system, which now comes standard on WRX Premium models. This vibrant touchscreen system provides access to a number of connected apps, hands-free phone functions, streaming audio, and satellite radio. Smartphone integration is now easier than ever thanks to the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And to help keep your focus on the road ahead, the WRX also offers plenty of voice actions, activated with the press of a button on the steering wheel.

Front passengers are treated to a pair of Ultrasuede-trimmed Recaro seats, which provide improved support and adjustability (eight-way power for the driver) in addition to stylish red accents that match the contrast stitching found throughout the cabin. Keyless access with push-button start is also standard on the Series.Gray model.

For the data-loving performance enthusiast, a 5.9-inch LCD color multi-function display located atop the dashboard communicates the vehicle’s status as well as important information like boost pressure, pedal input, chassis yaw, and more. It’s a quick and easy way to ensure your WRX is operating at its best.

Other interior features include a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat that further expands the already-cavernous trunk area, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and auto-up/down for both front windows.

2019 Subaru WRX Series.Gray Performance

During our time with the 2019 WRX Series.Gray, it rained nearly every day — which normally wouldn’t be a good thing — but driving in inclement weather is where Subaru’s legendary symmetrical all-wheel drive system really gets to shine.

While other cars struggled with the wet road surfaces, our WRX test model felt planted and confident as it automatically distributed power to the appropriate wheels for maximum traction. Active Torque Vectoring (part of the Vehicle Dynamics Control) seamlessly stepped in when necessary to enhance cornering response and minimize understeer, and the result was an impressive display of stability and maneuverability.

At highway speeds, we were able to experience the benefits of the WRX’s track-tuned suspension, which features aggressive spring and damper rates, large anti-roll bars, and reinforced suspension mounting. Feedback from the road was informative and direct, and the Series.Gray stayed impressively flat during quick lane changes or sweeping curves.

Of course, the storied 2.0-liter boxer engine is one of the main reasons that the WRX Series.Gray is such a well-rounded performance machine. Producing 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, this turbocharged four-cylinder engine offers excellent response across nearly its entire power band. Launches and rolling accelerations pushed us back into the seats and put a huge grin on our faces. This sports sedan turns even the simplest trip to the grocery store into a thrilling adventure.

And with all of this power on tap, the WRX still remains economical — fuel efficiency for the 2019 Subaru WRX Series.Gray is an EPA estimated 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway**.

2019 Subaru WRX Series.Gray Safety

Subaru vehicles are one of the safest on the road today, and for 2019, all WRX models equipped with a CVT transmission will come equipped with standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. This predictive system can warn you of danger, and also intervene when necessary to help minimize accidents and injuries.

Unfortunately, the Series.Gray’s manual transmission configuration means EyeSight isn’t available, but there are still plenty of other advanced safety features to be found on the vehicle. Standard equipment includes Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), a multitude of airbags, electronic brake-force distribution, tire pressure monitoring system, rear view camera, and a ring-shape reinforcement frame design.

Our test model also came with performance brake pads, steering responsive headlights, and front fog lights.
