Sign of Things to Come: 2019 Jaguar I-Pace Test Drive Review

Meet the Jaguar I-Pace. Not a sedan or full-fledged crossover, this is the brand’s first all-electric offering, and seeks to impress the luxury crowd by marrying performance and eco-friendly technology. Importantly, this isn’t some hashed-together attempt at an electric vehicle, but a well thought out competitor that’s make prospective Tesla buyers study their options.

With elegant and efficient lines, a low roofline and an aerodynamic body, the new I-Pace comes to us in a wrapper that’s quite fetching. Its well-crafted shape cuts through the air by providing owners with a drag coefficient of just 0.29 Cd, which is the product of many design elements. Notably, the inwardly curved grille directs airflow through the understated hood scoop, up and over the roofline, and around the rear haunches, while an integrated lower rear diffuser helps minimize drag in the rear. Then there are the door handles, which recess directly into the body, and help air flow around the I-Pace’s smooth lines.

The stylists have given the I-Pace a sporty and aggressive persona, which in my opinion, solidifies it as one of the best-looking EVs currently on sale. This shape is the culmination of intelligent thinking aimed at maximizing efficiency while increasing overall range. And wow, does this performance EV look cool.  With 22-inch alloy wheels sporting carbon inserts, wonderful road manners, and a head-turning exterior presence, the I-Pace is a bold statement. Not only does it showcases a new direction for the company, it also pushes the boundaries of what the traditional consumer thinks of Jaguar as a brand.

Modern, comfortable, and featuring an abundance of technology, the 2019 I-Pace welcomes occupants with an interior that’s sure to please. Make no mistake; piloting the I-Pace is an interactive experience and one that, quite honestly, takes a bit of getting used to.

With not one, but three digital screens, a push button drivetrain, a mix of eco-friendly and luxury materials, along with an HVAC system that could be found on the Starship Enterprise, the I-Pace might initially can some drivers to go into sensory overload. Because we’re living in changing times, and manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of what many of us would consider normal. It’s not until you step back and commit to the technology that you fully begins to appreciate just how useful it is.

If you’re an owner of an EV, then the odds of you being a techno-geek are pretty high. Jaguar says that the I-Pace is “Wired For Life”, something we wholeheartedly believe. While the I-Pace is plugged in, for instance, the interior can be pre-heated or cooled via an app on your phone. The EV Navigation not only shows your range on a map, but also syncs with the vehicles different driving modes to help owners find convenient charging points, while maximizing efficiency. Then there’s the internal AI (artificial intelligence) that learns your driving preferences, then adjusts features like the interior temperature, seat positions and even the radio settings autonomously at different times of the day.

Tech aside, the cabin is also quite comfortable. The seats are electronically adjustable and supportive, there are USB and mobile charging ports throughout, and there’s also a fair amount of storage, with 25.3 cubic-feet available with the rear seats up and 51 cubic-feet when they’re folded flat. The designers have also graced the I-Pace with a standard glass panoramic roof that runs the entire length of the vehicle. Not only does this flood the cabin with light, but it gives the interior a more open feel.

So let’s talk performance. The I-Pace is powered by two electric motors that are paired to a single-speed transmission which powers all four wheels. This results in an output rating of 394 horsepower and 512 lb-ft of torque. Zero to 60 mph comes in at a brisk 4.5-seconds, with the I-Pace tripping the ¼-mile in 13.3 seconds. For those planning to go where the pavement ends, the suspension will raise the body up two inches on command.

Jaguar claims up to a 234 mile range on a full charge, but as you well know, this will vary depending on how the vehicle is driven and what accessories (heat, A/C, defroster) are being used while underway. The I-Pace calculates range based on real-time data and adjusts accordingly via the range indicator that’s located in the main cluster. Rapid Charging (100kW DC) will see the I-Pace gain up to an 80% charge from empty in just 40-minutes. Standard commercial charging (50kW) will show 80% in 85 minutes, while an at-home Single Phase 7kW 230V charging can take up to 12.9 hours to reach 100% capacity. As with most EVs, the I-Pace uses regenerative braking to recharge the battery and maximize range while underway. This allows for single pedal driving in most situations, and can be set to either High or Low Regen depending on your driving style.

There are also three different drive modes – Comfort, ECO and Dynamic. Comfort is the default , and will be a favorite amongst owners, as it delivers the best balance of performance and economy. Dynamic Mode increase suspension stiffness, steering weight, and pedal response for a more aggressive behind-the-wheel experience, while ECO Mode maximizes overall range by optimizing energy consumption throughout the vehicle. Vehicle Creep is another interesting feature that emulates the “roll forward” aspects of a traditional combustion engine and automatic transmission when stopped at a light or in traffic. EPA MPGe estimates come in at 80 MPGe in the city, 72 MPGe on the highway, and 76-MPGe* during combined driving.

Overall the driving dynamics of the I-Pace are on point with others in the class. It’s comfortable, quiet at speed, and with instant torque and acceleration, it’s also quite a bit of fun to drive.

By using a combination of aluminum and steel, Jaguar has formed what amounts to a rigid cage around the batteries to help keep occupants safe. There’s also an external sound system that, while traveling at speeds under 12 mph, emits a signal that makes pedestrians aware of the vehicles presence. Those are obviously in addition to the airbags throughout the cabin, anti-lock brakes, emergency braking, and lane keep assist. As the first all-electric offering from Jaguar it must be said that the engineers have done a wonderful job. Not only is the I-Pace quick, but it’s also fun to drive — and extremely handsome. The I-Pace could also be a sign of things to come from the company, and that’s A-OK with me, as this EV checks every box.
