Truly Gorgeous Design: 2019 INFINITI QX50 Test Drive

For the longest time, the Infiniti QX50 was kind of flying under the radar.  But that’s completely changed with the debut of the all-new 2019 Infiniti QX50. I mean just look at this thing, it is truly gorgeous. Honestly, if I were to rank the segment based on exterior design alone, the INFINITI QX50 definitely comes in the top three.

Now, does the rest of the package match the handsome looks? Let’s find out by taking a look at all the interesting facts and details on the 2019 INFINITI QX50.

2019 INFINITI QX50 Exterior

Based on the QX Sport Inspiration Concept and the QX50 Concept, INFINITI did an exceptional job of carrying over all the sleek design elements from the concepts to the production model. On the front, the muscular stance of the QX50 is highlighted by the brand’s signature double-arch grille along with the hood which perfectly flows into the character lines along the side. The headlamps on the QX50 are inspired by those on the Q60 Coupe and as INFINITI puts it, they “emulate the human eyebrow.” To get those headlamps you’re going to have to at least start at the QX50 Pure AWD trim level, and the model I tested here is the top-of-the-line QX50 Essential AWD. The side of the QX50 also features the brand’s signature crescent cut on the D-pillar while the rear end is enhanced with stylish LED tail lamps and a chrome tailgate strip. Overall, I’m really into the sculpted and beefy look of the QX50.

2019 INFINITI QX50 Interior

As an iPhone user, I’m a huge fan of Apple CarPlay and with everyone being attached to their smartphones these days, it’s nice to have a seamless integration into your vehicle. Personally, I really enjoy the ability to open up Google Maps for navigation use and using Siri to answer my text and WhatsApp messages.

With that being said, I absolutely love everything about the interior of the 2019 INFINITI QX50 — other than the fact that it doesn’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity. The infotainment system is housed in two touchscreen displays, a setup that may confuse some users at first. The upper display encompasses the navigation system, while below that is another display that houses the audio controls, vehicle settings, apps, and other things like destination entry.

So overall, the cabin of the 2019 INFINITI QX50 is an outstanding place to be. The top-of-the-line QX50 Essential model I test drove here features excellent build quality with extensive use of leather and microsuede trim. To enhance the luxurious ambiance of the interior, the Essential model also comes with plush and extremely comfortable quilted leather seats.

The cabin is also quite roomy with front legroom coming in at 39.6-inches and rear legroom at 38.7 inches. Cargo capacity comes in at 31.4 cubic-feet with the second row upright, and 65.1 cubic-feet with the second row folded.

2019 INFINITI QX50 Performance

I’m not sure how many buyers in the luxury crossover segment are concerned with performance but I would bet that the majority don’t really care for 0-60 times and sharp handling. For those that do, some luxury brands offer a performance-oriented option of their models. I’m sure luxury brands have done their research and found that most buyers in this segment just want something that looks fancy, has a luxurious interior, and provides a comfortable way to get from point A to point B. If you’re one of those buyers, then the new INFINITI QX50 is a solid choice.

Power for the 2019 Infiniti QX50 comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo unit making 268 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a CVT transmission that allows it to run from zero to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds with a top speed of 140 mph.

While the QX50’s engine provides enough power for quick acceleration, the handling and steering feel are just average. Even when I popped the QX50 into the Sport driving mode, I didn’t really feel it make an extra connection with the road and that could be due to the electronic steering and CVT transmission.

Fuel economy wise, 2019 INFINITI QX50 averages an EPA-rated 24/30 mpg* (city/highway).

2019 INFINITI QX50 Safety

Besides the long list of standard features, the 2019 INFINITI QX50 comes with a range of driver assist features including lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, lane departure control, and much more.

2019 INFINITI QX50 Overall

There is no doubt that the luxury crossover landscape is more competitive than ever. With more than ten choices, new buyers have an abundance of options and all of them happened to be in a race to beat out their rivals. The 2019 INFINITI QX50 is an awesome choice for those that aren’t focused on sporty drive but require a luxurious cabin.

While prices for the 2019 Infiniti QX50 AWD start at $38,350**, they can quickly run up to close to $60,000. The INFINITI QX50 Essential AWD I tested here carries a total price tag of $59,085. Visit your local AutoNation Infiniti dealership for a test drive today.
