Pickup trucks have been around for over a century, and in that time, they’ve evolved from workhorses to family haulers equipped with more features than a luxury car. Of course, their prices have gone up as well. It used to be that they were on the lower end of the price spectrum, even for 3/4-ton variants. But now in 2019, these giants can be optioned out to over $70,000. At the forefront of that change is the 2019 GMC Sierra Denali 1500 Crew Cab, a thoroughly modern machine with an as-tested price of $67,735**, and a list of options that will blow you away.

I must say that out of the gate, this thing is pretty good looking. It’s big and bold with a presence that screams – I am a truck! That massive three-slot chrome grille makes a statement and according to GMC, helps to give the engine a bit more airflow. The high-intensity LED headlamps are sculpted into the body, as are the inset auxiliary driving lights with chrome trim and a unique lower front fascia that contains twin tow points.
The wheels themselves are large brushed chrome 22” x 9” multi-spoke units running 275/50-series all-season tires that fill out the wheel wells nicely. And then, sitting right above on the front quarters resides a larger fender badge showcasing to the world that you’ve got the big 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8. The cab itself is tastefully done and combines rearview mirrors with chrome caps, a little shark antenna and a combination of chrome and black trim to round it out.
While at first glance the bed may seem standard, rest assured there are a few little touches that set it apart from the competition. The next generation Sierra Denali, for instance, offers more substantial corner steps in the rear bumper along with twin polished exhaust tips and a 2” trailer hitch receiver with 4 and 7-pin connectors. The real news, however, is GMCs introduction of its’ new MultiPro Tailgate that can be tailored to how you load and unload your Sierra. With two gates, a primary and secondary, you can choose from a variety of dropdowns that include a lowered step that supports up to 375 pounds, a built-in brace to stop long loads from sliding out, as well as a natural access function for loading and unloading cargo from street level. A 400w external outlet and LED lights can be found in the bed as well. All told, this is a pretty cool package that includes some innovative and well-engineered features.
2019 GMC Sierra Denali 1500 Crew Cab Interior
Comfortable and nicely finished, the interior of the new 2019 Sierra Denali is loaded with convenience features that buyers will enjoy. There’s no doubt that this cabin was designed around usability, as the ergonomic layout it employs is one of the best I’ve seen. From a comfort perspective, it offers plenty of room. Leather-covered seats offer heat and ventilation up front with heated surfaces in the rear. Storage was of the utmost importance with GMC employing a cavernous center console and rear seats that fold up along with pockets in the actual seat backs themselves. In truth, the rear compartment of the Sierra 1500 offers more interior storage than some small CUVs.
That aside, the Sierra offers up great technology by way of an eight-inch color touchscreen display. Here you’ll find things like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, vehicle and audio settings, navigation, full-surround camera system, and even access to the new ProGrade Trailering System. Dual-zone HVAC controls with large dials and buttons; mean that both driver and passengers alike will find them intuitive and easy to use. Multiple charging ports (USB, 110V and micro USB) along with a trailer brake bias controller are also located in the center dash.
A combination of analog and digital gauges make up the cluster, while an eight-inch driver information center grants access to vehicle features and the different drive modes (Tour, Sport, Off-Road, Tow/Haul). To the left of the cluster is the Denali’s Traction Select System that allows one to toggle between 4×4 Auto, 2-Wheel Drive, 4-High and 4-Low. A two-speed transfer case is also available. New for the Sierra for 2019 is a new multicolor heads-up display – a feature that not only works brilliantly, but that should be standard equipment on every vehicle.
2019 GMC Sierra Denali 1500 Crew Cab Performance
If there was ever a full-size pickup that doesn’t drive like one, this is it. GMC has done a masterful job not only improving road feel with the Sierra, but they’ve managed to make it the first full-size truck I’d want to drive daily. Continuous Damping Adaptive Ride Control is the secret as it uses sensors to monitor both the road and the truck itself while cornering, accelerating, trailering and braking. It works remarkably well and makes this massive, almost 5,500-pound Sierra feel far lighter than it actually is.
Drivability aside, a full-size truck still needs to do full-size truck things like towing and carrying a payload. Thankfully GMC has addressed this as well. The ProGrade trailering system utilizes a slew of cameras and sensors to help with trailer connectivity by letting one view every backup angle possible. There’s also trailer hitch guidance with a hitch view feature to make lining things up a snap, along with a trailing app with a step-by-step checklist.
A 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 lives under the hood and pumps out 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. This allows for a tow rating of up to 9,300 pounds along with a payload capacity of up to 1,610 pounds. A ten-speed automatic transmission puts the power down to the four-wheel drive system and provides smooth, precise shifts while EPA rated fuel economy numbers come in at 15 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg in combined driving.*
2019 GMC Sierra Denali 1500 Crew Cab Safety
Premium features aside, the Sierra comes with some pretty advanced safety features. Items like available Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Alert, Intelligent Brake Assist, Front and Rear Park Assist, a full view Surround Vision Camera, Anti-Lock brakes and of course airbags can be found throughout the cabin.
