Say hello to the 2019 Ford Edge ST, the first SUV from Ford Performance. Based on the standard Ford Edge, the ST benefits from a 335-horsepower, 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, an enhanced all-wheel drive system, performance-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission, and a revised suspension system. We spent over two weeks with the 2019 Edge ST, and in that time discovered that it’s not only extremely practical, but a hoot to drive when the roads get twisty.
2019 Ford Edge ST Exterior
With a large wave-like grille, projector beam headlamps, and a revised lower front-end treatment, the Edge ST comes to us with a bulldoggish stance and an aggressive demeanor. Ford has stripped anything and everything off the Edge that would make one think it’s a standard family hauler, meaning any bits of chrome have been replaced with flat or gloss black trim. The wheels are 21-inch alloys that wear beefy 265/40-series Pirelli P-Zero performance tires, and out back, a sporty diffusor with integrated tow hitch and twin exhaust tips, so folks will know this is not your standard Ford Edge.
With its White Platinum Metallic paint, black wheels and large red calipers that sat on oversized 13.6-inch rotors, we found our test ST quite striking. Special attention was also paid to the roof, as it benefits from a beautiful panoramic vista treatment that keeps the entire cabin feeling open and airy. The designers at Ford Performance have also done a great job dialing out the adolescent feel that plagued the Focus and Fiesta ST, as the Edge ST presents itself to onlookers with a much more refined, adult persona.
2019 Ford Edge ST Interior
The key to any SUV or crossover, regardless if it’s performance minded or not, is for it to be usable in the real world. Not only does the Edge excel here, but thanks to the ST treatment, it now feels like a much more refined version of its former self. With room for five adults, the Edge ST offers comfortable and supportive, heated and ventilated seats that are great for the driver and front passenger. Rear occupants lose out on the ventilation, but benefit from heated surfaces and multiple power ports. Contrasting white stitching is present on the seats, steering wheel and door panels.
All Edge models come with a 60/40 rear split seat to help optimize the Edge’s impressive storage. With 39.2 cu-ft of cargo space with the rears seats up and 73.4 cu-ft when folded flat, the Edge offers room enough to haul just about everything you’ll need from weekend family outings to that trip to your local home improvement store. And just in case you’re wondering, all the interior materials are of nice quality and the fit and finish throughout the cabin is excellent.
Ford’s SYNC 3 system with an eight-inch touchscreen was introduced a few years ago, and is the gateway into the vehicle’s interior functions. With a responsive touchscreen, clean graphics, great voice recognition software, and an intuitive interface, the SYNC 3 system makes navigating features like audio, navigation, mobile device setup, and climate controls a snap.
2019 Ford Edge ST Performance
The key to the Edge ST flourishing in the performance SUV market lives under the hood. A 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 pumps out 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque through a crisp shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive helps the ST reach 60 mph in around 5.5 seconds, and achieve a limited top speed of 133 mph. The ST also receives a revised suspension, with stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, along with revised transmission mapping that results in Sport Mode being able to hold each gear longer. For drivers looking to have a even more fun, wheel-mounted paddles allow you to run through the gears manually.
On the road and when driving under normal conditions, the Edge ST soaks up mile after mile with ease and achieves EPA rated fuel economy numbers of 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 mpg during combined driving*. However, it’s when the roads get twisty that it really comes alive. This isn’t just a track-oriented SUV, rather, it has the feel of a sports sedan with a very high roofline. Corner transitions are predictable and confidence inspiring, and thanks to a Sport Mode that increases steering feel, drivers actually get a fair amount of feedback transmitted back. As compared to other Edge models, the ST also benefits from a lower center of gravity, as well as larger brake calipers that clamp on 13.6-inch vented rotors.
2019 Ford Edge ST Safety
When it comes to safety the Edge ST doesn’t disappoint. Items like roll stability control, dual stage front airbags, side-impact airbags, a second row safety canopy with rollover sensor, knee airbags for the driver and passenger, rear inflatable safety belts, and an SOS Post-Crash Alert System are integrated to make sure both driver and passengers arrive to their destination safe and sound.

2019 Ford Edge ST Overall
The Edge ST is not about setting lap times. It’s not about drag racing from light to light. Nor is it about bragging to your friends about how fast your new SUV is. Instead, the Edge ST is about understated power and handling, and delivering giggles to anyone behind the wheel. Plus, the utility factor makes it hard to beat.
