Quick and Well-mannered: 2019 Chevrolet Equinox LT 2.0T Test Drive

This is a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox LT AWD that’s equipped with a 252 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It’s fast, comfortable and with an as tested price of just $36,580, it outshines many others in the small crossover segment. This is not only due to great handling and on-road manners, but it’s also downright quick for a budget minded SUV, which is something we simply didn’t expect.

Even though its one of the fastest growing market segments, designing an attractive crossover isn’t as easy as it may seem. Think of it like this – SUVs were spawned from light-duty trucks. That’s why in the beginning they came with body-on-frame construction, live axles and beefy looking tires with bulging white letters.

But the crossover caters more to those looking for comfort and ride quality than off-road prowess. The 2019 Equinox is interesting in the fact that while it is most certainly a crossover, the overall body design still has a masculine feel to it, something those coming from the SUVs of old will appreciate. Also, instead of utilizing extra body cladding or cheap add-ons, the Equinox instead employs a rolling confidence that many in the segment are missing.

A bold front end treatment sees a massive three-part grille that uses horizontal slats combined with polished trim. Projector beam headlamps with daytime running LEDs make, a statement while the lower fascia sees deep callouts that house auxiliary driving lights. By using contoured lines that run the length of the vehicle, the Equinox finds itself free of dead spots for the eyes to rest on. Under the wheel wells sit 18” bright-machined aluminum wheels with brushed silver pockets that wear 225/60-series all-season tires.

A subtle roof spoiler and nicely designed automatic rear hatch look great, while the blacked-out lower bumper houses twin polished exhaust tips and a hidden trailer hitch.

While leather is nice, on a cold frosty morning cloth seats win hands down — especially when they’re optioned with heated surfaces. Chevrolet must be commended as the fabric used is of very nice quality, and combines standard overlays with a honeycomb insert and contrasting copper-colored stitching. The rest of the interior is a combination of soft touch plastics and vinyl, while the steering wheel gets treated to a leather wrap.

This is a very clean design overall, with the cabin presenting itself as comfortable and easy to live with. The gauge cluster combines large traditional gauges with an inset information screen that displays speed, trip information, media selections and more. Mounted center dash is Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 Plus media center with navigation. This provides access to vehicles settings, as well as mobile device connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with a host of free applications.

Intuitive HVAC controls are located directly beneath the touchscreen, and thankfully, Chevrolet has seen fit to use a standard shifter as opposed to a rotary knob like so many others. Rear seating is also quite ample, and features twin USB charge ports and a standard 110v inverter located in the lower console.

Thanks to the 60/40-rear fold down seats, storage space comes in at 29.90 cubic-feet with the rear seats up, and 63.90 cubic-feet with the seats folded flat. Dropping the read seats is a snap, thanks to the handy latches in the rear compartment.

2019 Chevrolet Equinox LT Performance

When equipped with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox  is an absolute hoot when you stand on the gas pedal. There’s 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque on tap, and it’s sent to all four corners via a nine-speed automatic transmission.

That means 60 mph comes up in around 6.5 seconds, and while that’s not blisteringly fast, for a five-passenger crossover that weighs 3,610 pounds, that type of acceleration is impressive. It also handles great, and with all-wheel drive, weather is never a concern. Fuel economy is also respectable, with EPA rated numbers coming in at 28 mpg on the highway, 22 mpg in the city and 24 mpg in combined driving.*

We had the opportunity to take a pretty solid 250-mile road trip that included everything from the open highway, to back roads, to changing elevations of up to 6,000 feet, and never once did the Equinox complain. Instead, it rewarded us with great on-road composure and confidence-inspiring road manners.

Thankfully, Chevrolet hasn’t forgotten that many crossover buyers still need SUV capabilities, especially when it comes to towing. So it was great to find out that when equipped with the 2.0T engine, towing is rated at 3,500 pounds, meaning it’ll handle a travel trailer, small boat, or side-by-side without breaking a sweat. Not bad for a sub-$37,000 family hauler!
