Cadillac has been in the crossover segment for quite some time, as it’s first entry into the segment was back in 2004, when it released the all-wheel drive SRX. But given how crossovers are dominating the market at every level, Cadillac has moved forward with more advanced designs, and expanded its offering of eco-friendly power plants.
On that note, behold the 2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport AWD. It comes to us in a sport-oriented wrapper that packs safety, economy and luxury into package that is sure to make perspective buyers stand up and take notice.
2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport Exterior
Designed specifically for the luxury crossover segment, the 2019 XT4 was designed for those who utilize their vehicles in the modern world. According to Cadillac, everything from its size to the sculpted shape was engineered to appeal to a buyers’ emotional side, and was developed to give the brand’s smallest offering the presence of its largest.
Sitting on a 109.4-inch wheelbase and with an overall length of 181.1 inches, the XT4 appears larger than it actually is. A bold front end combines elements of sport and ruggedness by utilizing an aggressive satin black front fascia, large LED trimmed headlamps, and a blacked-out grille sporting a new logo design. A slightly bulged hood also gives onlookers a sense a power.
The satin black treatment continues up and over the wheel arches, down the rockers and then finally, onto the rear bumper that houses a concealed tow hitch and polished exhaust tips. Large LED taillights also grace the rear of the XT4 and rise up from the outer edges of the rear automatic lift gate and into the body while a roof spoiler adds to the vehicles overall sportiness. Our tester came to us in Twilight Blue Metallic paint, along with the optional 20-inch split seven-spoke wheels with polished finishes, and the combination was quite striking.
What was even more interesting though was the amount of comments the XT4 received from what I ‘d consider a younger demographic. Not only did they touch on the overall styling, but many commented that it was a great size overall. In that regard, it seems the XT4 is catching the attention of the exact audience Cadillac designed it for.
2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport Interior
I’m a huge fan of interiors that are clean and unobstructed, and here, the XT4 shines. From the beautifully styled cluster that employs both analog gauges and a digital information screen, to the infotainment system and heads-up display, this cabin was not only intuitive, but also easy to live with on a daily basis. A thick-rimmed steering wheel with spoke-mounted controls lets one toggle the information that’s found on the in-cluster information screen. Here, drivers can view trip information, instant and average mileage, drive modes, and whether or not they’re operating in either two-wheel or all-wheel drive.
Cadillac’s large 8.0-inch infotainment screen can be accessed via either the touchscreen or through a small rotary knob located on the center console. Here, everything from climate and audio, to navigation and vehicle settings can be viewed. The screen is clear with system functionality easily mastered in no time. It must also be said that the front seats, with their optional massage function, is a gift on long drives.
Thankfully, Cadillac realizes that crossovers need to appeal to more than just the person behind the wheel, and to that effect they’ve incorporated features that young families will enjoy. First, the XT4 is the segment leader when it comes for rear legroom and knee clearance for rear passengers. Not only does that mean easy exit and entry, but obviously enhanced comfort as well. The rear leather seating surfaces offer up heat, along with USB and micro USB connectivity.
Split folding 60/40 rear seats allow varied storage arrangements and in total the XT4 treat owners to 22.5 cubic-feet of storage behind the rear seats, with a total of 48.9 cubic-feet available with the rears folded flat.
2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport Performance
With 237 horsepower and 285 lb-ft of torque coming from a turbocharged 2.0L inline-four, the XT4 Sport provides drivers with decent power and performance. Bury your foot in the carpet, and 60 mph arrives in 7.2-seconds, with power being transferred to the wheels by a nine-speed automatic transmission. At 3,896-pounds, the XT4 is a bit of a heavy weight, but never once did we feel as though we were strapped with inadequate power. The transmission is one of the quietest we’ve experienced, and shifts are almost unnoticeable — even when driving aggressively.
Another nice feature is that the XT4 allows one to toggle between front-wheel and all-wheel drive with the touch of a button, thus helping drivers to maximize the XT4’s EPA rated fuel economy numbers of 29-mpg highway, 22-mpg in the city and 24-mpg during combined driving.* On the road, the XT4 was quite fun to drive spiritedly, thanks to our tester’s optional adaptive suspension. Curves were met with zero in the way of drama and when on freeway surfaces we were treated to nothing but a comfortable and compliant ride along with an extremely quiet cabin. Thanks to its size, parking the XT4 in urban environments was never an issue.
2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport Safety
Cadillac understands that safety is paramount, and as such has equipped the 2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport with the latest in the way of safety features. With eight standard airbags, a rear vision camera, and anti-lock brakes along with available options like Forward Collision Alert, Front Pedestrian Braking, Land Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, and many others, the 2019 XT4 Sport was designed to keep you and your passengers safe.
