With the introduction of the all-new 2019 A6, Audi is once again raising the benchmark for the mid-size luxury sedan market.
A complete digitalization of user controls, an all-encompassing safety suite, and performance enhancements across the board are just a few examples of how this quintessential premium vehicle is more than just “next year’s model.”
To better understand how Audi is driving true innovation with its eighth-generation A6 sedan, we pored over the best details of our 2019 Audi A6 Premium Plus test model, and we’re ready to share the findings.
2019 Audi A6 Premium Plus Sedan Exterior
Looking classier and more regal than ever before, the 2019 A6 is an embodiment of Audi’s newest design language, which features large surfaces, strong edges, and purposeful character lines.
The brand’s signature Singleframe grille has been widened and now sits lower on the front fascia, and with the help of large side air inlets, conveys the A6’s performance-forward nature. Our Premium Plus test model also came standard with HD matrix-design LED headlights that not only deliver high-powered illumination, but further emphasize the vehicle’s width via individual horizontal elements. At the rear, LED taillights with dynamic turn signals (special animation) continue this visual messaging.
On the road, our test model’s combination of Glacier White metallic exterior paint along with 20-inch 5-V-spoke bi-color wheels made sure the A6 sedan received nods of approval everywhere it went. And the contrast offered by the blacked-out power sunroof and “invisible” B-pillars really accentuated the vehicle’s sleek profile and athletic stance.
Other exterior features include a dark chrome diffuser, power-folding exterior mirrors, hands-free opening trunk, and touch-sensitive door handles for keyless entry.
These elegant-yet-sporty styling choices allow the 2019 A6 to retain its unique Audi DNA while advancing the model line to satisfy the ever-changing preferences of consumers.
2019 Audi A6 Premium Plus Sedan Interior
One of the best features of any Audi interior has always been the MMI multimedia system, and for the 2019 model year, this award-winning infotainment hub receives a dramatic upgrade to become the all-new MMI touch response system. Two large touchscreens are now integrated into the center dashboard and upper console area for a streamlined and futuristic appearance.
The upper 10.1-inch display is your main portal to everything the A6 has to offer: navigation, phone connectivity, music, online apps, vehicle settings, and more. And the best part? The MMI system is fully customizable with drag-and-drop functionality. Your unique settings can also be saved to a profile so if another driver makes adjustments, you’ll always be able to restore your preferences with a single press.
The lower 8.6-inch screen is used for climate controls, custom shortcuts, and also handwriting input. Gone are the days when you could only input one letter at a time — the all-new MMI touch response system recognizes entire words so you can write more naturally when entering destinations, music stations, or phone contacts.
And the improved accessibility doesn’t end there. Both text and voice commands are now much less restrictive, meaning you can speak to the A6 naturally. Saying the phrase “I’m cold,” will prompt the A6 to ask, “What temperature would you like to set the cabin to?” It’s these thoughtful touches that really make the 2019 A6 stand out from its competitors in the luxury sedan market.
Of course, all of the usual amenities and comfort features are present as well, including leather surfaces, heated and power-adjustable front seats, Audi virtual cockpit, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay support, split-folding rear seatback, and much, much more.
Our test model’s Okapi Brown interior was also enhanced by a variety of option packages, which added equipment like a Bang & Olufsen sound system, wireless phone charging, 4-zone automatic climate control, power rear window sunshade, and a heated steering wheel, to name a few.
2019 Audi A6 Premium Plus Sedan Performance
While luxury and comfort are at the forefront of the A6’s appeal, it’s also backed by a long history of motorsports experience and technology.
Under the hood of every A6 is a lighter, newly developed 3.0-liter TFSI V6 engine that delivers 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. With more power than the previous generation and a usable range that starts at an incredibly low 1,370 RPMs, this means the 2019 A6 can launch from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 5.1 seconds.
And whether you’re going on a leisurely cruise or spiritedly carving through twisting roads, innovative engineering along with a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission allow the A6 to efficiently transfer this performance to the pavement, all while achieving an EPA estimated fuel economy of 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway**.
2019 is also the first model year where all A6 models come standard with Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle technology — a compact battery stores recovered energy, and assists the start/stop system with smoother activation.
Mechanically, the all-new A6 is superior to the outgoing model in almost every way. It’s more rigid, better balanced, and offers greater precision thanks to material choice and placement, along with a redesigned suspension architecture. The result is a refined on-road experience that utilizes Audi’s signature drive modes (Auto, Comfort, and Dynamic) to ensure all occupants travel safely and comfortably. More importantly, it also means the A6 is nimble, responsive, and exciting to drive.
2019 Audi A6 Premium Plus Sedan Safety
When it comes to passenger safety, the 2019 A6 offers one of the most complete safety and driver assistance systems of any car. Up to 24 different sensors are used to help the A6 understand its surroundings, and it will alert and/or intervene according to the severity of the situation.
Whether you’re changing lanes, parking, or exiting the vehicle, the 2019 A6 is always watching everything around you like a guardian. For those who feel this level of awareness may be unnecessary, the alerts can be adjusted to better suit your preference and driving style.
This enhanced understanding of your surroundings also makes its way to the parking assist cameras, which not only provide a 360-degree top-down view, but adds a virtual 3D environment. You can rotate a model of the A6 to ensure it’s clear of all obstacles, eliminating the need to exit the car and check for any hazards.
Our Premium Plus test model also came equipped with the available Adaptive Cruise Assist (ACA), which is an intelligent evolution of the previous-generation A6’s Traffic Jam Assist. ACA is by far one of our favorite driver assist features because it automatically maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and helps keep you centered in the lane. The system’s ability to sense the flow of traffic around you and its corrective inputs have been greatly refined for a much smoother, seamless experience. Stress levels during our congested commute is dramatically reduced when using Adaptive Cruise Assist, and we’d highly recommend this option for those who regularly sit in traffic.
Other safety highlights for the 2019 A6 include Audi pre sense, intersection assist, traffic sign recognition, rear cross traffic alert, and electronic stabilization control.
