2018 Subaru WRX Premium Test Drive Review

The Subaru WRX makes its debut for the 2018 model year with revised styling and enhanced ride quality, positioning it as the perfect sedan for all types of adventure-seekers.

Updated suspension tuning and a new optional Performance Package builds upon the everyday usability that makes the WRX one of the most popular vehicles in its class.

Get a feel for the WRX’s sportier attitude with a closer look at our 2018 Subaru WRX Premium test model.

2018 Subaru WRX Premium Exterior

The WRX’s sporty front fascia receives an updated design this year, featuring more aggressive lines as well as a larger lower grille opening. Together with the functional hood scoop, there’s no question that the WRX is all about performance.

Our WRX Premium test model came painted in a vibrant WR Pearl Blue, with standard, newly redesigned 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels wrapped in summer performance tires.

Although you can’t easily see it, the 2018 WRX features front and rear underspoilers, leading to a rear bumper with integrated diffuser. On the top side, you’ll find a low-profile trunk spoiler, with quad stainless-steel exhaust tips finishing out the look of the rear fascia.

Other exterior highlights include halogen headlights and fog lights, body-color power side mirrors, and red finish front and rear brake calipers.

The redesigned look of the 2018 WRX Premium really emphasizes the sedan’s performance capabilities and driving excitement, and helps it easily stand out from the crowd.

2018 Subaru WRX Premium Interior

The performance-focused interior of the 2018 WRX is treated to new enhancements, like premium materials and a quieter cabin. Red accent stitching can be found throughout the passenger space, along with carbon fiber-inspired inserts.

Unwanted noise is reduced thanks to the use of thicker door glass, revised door sealing, and a foam-filled windshield header beam. These updates allow only the best sounds — the roar of the exhaust and the hiss of the turbochargers — to come through into the cabin.

Our test model came equipped with red-accented Recaro performance design front seats (8-way power adjustment for the driver) as part of the available Performance Package. This configuration also deletes the moonroof for extra weight savings.

At the center of the dashboard is a SUBARU STARLINK Multimedia Plus system that features a 7-inch touchscreen, smartphone app integration, voice activated controls, HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth connectivity for audio streaming and hands-free phone calls.

And just above the STARLINK system is a 5.9-inch color multifunction display that can be configured to show a variety of information, like boost pressure, fuel efficiency, chassis status, and more.

The driver is treated to a leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel along with a sport design instrument cluster featuring a color LCD display, while the All-Weather Package adds heated front seats.

With room for five adults and a spacious trunk, the 2018 WRX is ready for any adventure, be it a long road trip or a day at the race track.

2018 Subaru WRX Premium Performance

Giving the 2018 WRX its incredibly quick acceleration is Subaru’s legendary 2.0-liter Boxer engine. This turbocharged 4-cylinder motor with direct injection produces 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque for effortless performance and speed.

A 6-speed manual transmission is standard on the WRX, and features an enhanced feel thanks to a new synchro design and reduced friction. Clutch operation has also been updated for smoother and easier engagement.

Of course, no Subaru is complete without Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with Active Torque Vectoring. Together with new front and rear suspension tuning, the 2018 WRX delivers stability and comfort both on the straights and during turns. The driving experience is extremely satisfying thanks to the WRX’s nimbleness, balanced feel, and incredible cornering performance.

Our test model also came equipped with the optional Performance Package, which adds red-painted brake calipers and upgraded JURID brake pads.

Fuel economy for the 2018 Subaru WRX Premium is an EPA estimated 27 mpg highway and 21 mpg city**.

2018 Subaru WRX Premium Safety

Subaru is always an industry leader when it comes to safety, and the WRX continues that trend with a variety of standard and available safety features, like seven airbags, tire pressure monitoring system, and standard rear-vision camera.

The front structure of the 2018 WRX has also been revised by Subaru to better withstand frontal collisions while the ring-shaped reinforcement frame body structure provides extra protection for the passenger area.

Standard Vehicle Dynamics Control and Traction Control System help keep you on your intended path, and Brake Assist applies extra braking pressure when it senses an emergency situation.
