The Land Rover Discovery is the ideal vehicle for those that are into off-roading but still crave a vehicle that they can take out for a night out on the town. The last time we saw a significant update to the Land Rover Discovery was in 2009 so the latest iteration was very much anticipated.
Back in the day, the Land Rover Discovery was largely focused on being a tough off-roading vehicle that the everyday buyer could park in their driveway. As time went on, the Land Rover Discovery became more and more luxurious. The new fifth-generation model takes the level of luxury to a whole new level in an endeavor to sit right next to the brand’s more elite Range Rover models. Let’s take a deeper look at the all-new 2018 Land Rover Discovery.
2018 Land Rover Discovery Exterior
The new 2018 Land Rover Discovery is a far deviation from the last-generation model. The new design language draws it closer to the other Land Rover and Range Rover models we’ve come to relish. It is by far one of the best and most polished looking Discovery models that we’ve seen.
The 2018 Land Rover Discovery sits on the same aluminum architecture that underpins the new Range Rover and Range Rover sport lineup. The wheelbase stretches a total of 115-inches with a total length coming in at 195.7-inches. Width comes in at 87.4-inches and the height reaches 73-inches. When it comes to off-roading, the approach angle for the 2018 Discovery comes in at 24.4 inches and the departure angle comes in at 25 inches. You’ll feel more than confident tackling unstable terrain as the new Land Rover Discovery has a total ground clearance of 11.1 inches. To put that in perspective, the new BMW X5 features a total ground clearance of 8.2-inches.
When compared to its competitors, the exterior of the 2018 Land Rover Discovery clearly stands out from the crowd. Yes, it’s boxier and more reserved than the likes of the BMW X5, Audi Q7, and Volvo XC90—but the Land Rover Discovery seems to be in a league of its own when it comes to the market and buyer it’s looking for.
2018 Land Rover Discovery Interior
Take a seat inside the 2018 Land Rover Discovery and you’re welcomed by a remarkably luxurious interior that will make you feel like you’re sitting in your own secluded sanctuary. There is a heavy use of high-quality materials throughout the cabin including premium leather seats, leather upholstery, and metal and wood trims.
Space wise, the 2018 Land Rover Discovery offers quite a bit of room for passengers and cargo. While we found ample legroom in the second and third row, what really blew us away was the cargo capacity. With the rear seats folded, the 2018 Discovery features a total of 77 cubic feet of space for anything that you want to throw back there. If you only plan on using the second-row, you’ll still enjoy a total of 42 cubic feet.
Our test model, the 2018 Land Rover Discovery HSE came loaded with almost all of the add-on options including the brand’s Touch Pro infotainment system which is housed in a 10-inch HD touchscreen display. The Land Rover Discovery can also be had with a rear seat entertainment system to keep your passengers busy while you’re tackling some challenging ground. The rear entertainment system consists of two eight-inch screens that are built into the headrests of the driver and passengers along with wireless headphones, HDMI, Mobile Hi-Definition Link and USB connections. We highly recommend upgrading to the Meridian Sound System that is made up of ten speakers and a dual-channel subwoofer.
Overall, the interior of the 2018 Land Rover Discovery features a very clean cut and classy layout.
2018 Land Rover Discovery Performance
Our 2018 Land Rover Discovery HSE SI6 came with a 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces a total of 340 horsepower with a maximum torque of 332 lb-ft of torque and while 0 to 60 mph numbers don’t really matter here, it can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.1 seconds.
Besides the on-road performance, which is nothing less than stellar, one would surely appreciate the capabilities of the 2018 Land Rover Discovery. For example, the optional All-Terrain Progress Control system will really allow you to focus on steering while the Discovery works through finding and maintaining a steady speed through obstacles on the terrain. The Terrain Response 2 system, which is also available as an added option, helps you find the best driving mode for certain conditions. However, the best feature in the 2018 Land Rover Discovery is probably the electronic air suspension which helps maintain an excellent ride quality and balance through some of the toughest and harshest driving conditions.
When it comes to fuel economy, the 2018 Land Rover Discovery is capable of achieving an EPA-rated 21/26 mpg* (city/highway).
2018 Land Rover Discovery Safety
While the 2018 Land Rover Discovery is one of the safest SUVs on the road, you can equip it with a range of driver assist technologies. While features like a rearview camera are standard you can add on lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, 360-degree surround view camera, and automatic park assist.
