Pocket Rocket: We’re Still Stoked on the 2018 Honda Civic Type R

We asked ourselves, if we were on the market for a new Honda Civic which trim level would we purchase? Hands-down, no-fooling, we shoot right to the 2018 Honda Civic Type R, and we’re going to tell you why. If you want:

Racers rejoice over the 2018 Honda Civic Type R. This is the hot hatch that will pound the ground on the road and track, and weighs than 3,000 pounds. Is it cliché to say ride like the wind? Well, if it is, we don’t care. Look under the hood and you’ll find a 2.0L VTEC® Turbocharged engine that generates 306-horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque with a torque-steer mitigation suspension and an adaptive damper system. The center-exit triple exhaust system growls in the best possible way.

And just as you might expect—or possibly—demand—from this high performance Honda, there’s a stick shift, so you can kick it old school on the road and track with the 6-speed manual transmission. Power is transferred to a lightweight flywheel and a Limited Slip Differential and Rev-Match Control, and the end result—a shot of adrenaline. A sense of euphoria as you become one with machine. Extreme confidence. Utter control.

But what else?

  • A satellite-linked navigation system
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility
  • Stability Assist/Traction Control
  • Electronic Brake Distribution and Brake Assist

However, we wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we didn’t focus for a few words on the design of the Honda Civic Type-R. There are some cars whose appearance truly does turn heads and drop jaws—literally. This is one of them. It’s one of those phenomenon where you actually can remember where you were the first time you saw one. We certainly do. Interstate 5 South. Outskirts of Seattle. Championship White. Fast Lane.

Double take.

Was that a storm trooper?

No kidding. First thoughts.

We are not sure we can coherently articulate just how scene-stealing this new design is, to adequately do it justice, but we’ll try our best. What we lack in ability, we’ll hopefully make up for with the inclusion of pictures.

Wings, side slits, lips, and tails—oh my!

But they are not there just for show or to make you feel as if you’re in your own Honda space odyssey. The inclusion and assemblage of all exterior aerodynamic elements—right down to every last fin—is there for a reason. Speed. Control. The hood-duct enhances the downforce that keeps you grounded for bulls-eye cornering. Other elements keep the Honda Civic R airtight like the splitter on the front bumper and fog lights that inhale air and distribute it above the front wheels; which also has another effect: whisper quietude.

The Honda Civic Type R has 20-inch alloy wheels with sticky-grippy, road-hugging 30-series tires. These fatter tires are graced with bulging fenders. The “intense” rear has been engineered to accelerate the downforce affects and critical pieces of this puzzle include the Honda signature double hatch, the rear spoiler, exaggerated wing, and four small fins that sit atop the rear window glass and function as vortex generators.
