With an overall length of 193.6-inches and riding on a 112.5-inch wheelbase, you immediately notice that the 2018 GMC Acadia SLT-1 is a good-sized vehicle. And with rugged good looks (thanks to the All-Terrain package) along with all-weather capabilities, it definitely feels more like a light-duty truck than a standard SUV. It also has power, storage, the latest in technology and a starting price of around $30,000 for a base model SL variant. Add these traits together and you’ll soon realize that GMC has come up with a capable family hauler that’s not only frugal and practical, but enjoyable to live with on a daily basis.

2018 GMC Acadia SLT-1 AWD Exterior

Redesigned in 2017, the exterior of the Acadia has been softened, making it less bulking looking than its predecessor. Our Quicksilver Metallic tester came equipped with the All-Terrain package (an $1,800 option), which meant black roof rails, special two-tone 20×8-inch aluminum alloys wearing 235/50-series tires, and a brushed three-slot grille.

A bold front-end combines sculpted projector-beam LED sealed headlamps with auxiliary driving lights with brushed trim in the lower front fascia. Out back a set of chrome exhaust tips are housed in a lower call-out beneath the rear bumper along with a hidden trailer hitch. Subtle badging and the use of a roof-mounted rear hatch spoiler help to round out the package.

2018 GMC Acadia SLT-1 AWD Interior

With seating for up to seven passengers and 79 cubic-feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded flat, the GMC Acadia seeks to accommodate everything one can throw at it. The interior is a mix of leather, soft touch surfaces and technology that seek to make the lives of its occupants easier. Our jet-black Kalahari leather-appointed heated and power adjustable front seats were comfortable, with nice bolstering and lower lumbar support. Rear second-row captains seats offer manual reclining, while third-row seating was better suited to children or smaller adults.

The center-mounted 8.0-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth functionality, and 4G LTE WiFi, along with various vehicle settings, and climate and audio controls. Multiple USB ports and a standard charging port are also available to keep mobile devices full of juice. Set dead center in the middle of the analog dash is a color display screen that features a digital speedometer, fuel economy, trip odometer, and more.

Once on the road, noise levels were much lower than expected, with the Acadia generating mile after mile of fatigue-free travel. A dual panoramic roof gave the cabin a light airy feel, while a standard style gear selector, along with a rotary knob for the Acadia’s all-wheel drive system, live in the center console.

2018 GMC Acadia SLT-1 AWD Performance

Under the hood is a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 310 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed automatic transmission. Our test unit was equipped with the optional all-wheel drive system (front wheel drive is standard) which also includes Hill Decent Control, a 3.16 rear-axle ratio and a fully independent suspension system with MacPherson struts up front and an independent five-link out back. Put your foot down and you’ll find that 60 mph is reach in just under seven seconds, which is more than adequate for an SUV that weighs in at 4,460-pounds.

As stated earlier, this is a large vehicle, but once behind the wheel, you’d never know it. Driving the Acadia is an enjoyable experience, and the overall steering feel was light, while hard braking and emergency handling maneuvers inspired nothing but confidence. Fuel economy is EPA-rated 25 mpg highway, 18 city and 22 mpg in combined driving*.

2018 GMC Acadia SLT-1 AWD Safety

Features like anti-lock brakes, airbags throughout the cabin and available features like Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure warning, Front Pedestrian Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and more, mean the 2018 GMC Acadia is sure to provide occupants with a safe driving experience.
