Chock-full of personality and value, the 500X is FIAT’s answer to the ever-growing demand for small crossovers, and it’s delivered with a unique panache that stems from a rich automotive heritage.
Visually, the 500X remains familiar, but its performance aspects and creature comforts have received thoughtful refinements for the 2018 model year, like the inclusion of Uconnect 4 across all trims.
More than a mode of transportation, the 500X is an accessible and energetic platform for self-expression, which we’ll demonstrate with the help of our 2018 FIAT 500X Pop test model.
2018 FIAT 500X Pop Exterior
Ever since its introduction in 2014, the 500X has been a fun and charismatic option for those who don’t want to settle for the status quo. Drawing from FIAT’s Cinquecento city car of the early ‘90s, the 500X offers classic Italian styling in a versatile compact crossover SUV form-factor.
Looking at the 500X, you’ll be reminded of its smaller sibling, the 500, as both vehicles feature FIAT’s signature winged logo and oblong halogen headlamps situated on a rounded front fascia. But that’s where the similarities end. With an overall length of 167.2 inches and ground clearance of 7 inches, the 500X offers a confident and athletic stance that subtly drops hints about its ruggedness. Black accent moldings line the lower sills and wheel arches, and nicely frame the optional 17-inch aluminum wheels.
Our test model came painted in a silky Grigio Graphite (Graphite Grey), and the optional Customer Preferred Package added extra styling touches, like satin chrome exterior mirrors, fog and cornering lamps, satin silver door handles, and a dual-pane power sunroof. A wide-opening rear hatch comes standard, along with a rear roof spoiler, incandescent tail lamps, and chrome exhaust tip.
The 2018 500X definitely wears its character on its sleeve, and makes for a refreshing choice in today’ssaturated SUV market.
2018 FIAT 500X Pop Interior
FIAT’s unique design language and bold styling are front and center inside the roomy cabin of the 2018 500X Pop. Our test model’s black interior featured splashes of colorful elements as part of the Blue Sky Edition, adding a lively feel to the instrument panel, dashboard, and cloth bucket seats.
For the 2018 model year, FIAT’s Uconnect 4 infotainment system is now standard equipment across all trims, and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The redesigned interface offers high resolution graphics and fast operation via the 7-inch touchscreen, and is one of our favorite in-car entertainment hubs. With the ability to customize the menu bar, you can easily access satellite radio, streaming media, Bluetooth phone connectivity, vehicle settings, and more with just a single press. Alternatively, steering wheel-mounted buttons plus voice recognition offer seamless controls for when you need to keep your eyes on the road.
Although the 2018 500X is categorized as a small crossover, there’s still plenty of space for passengers and cargo. Head and shoulder room are ample, and up to 32.1 cu. ft. of storage space is achievable thanks to the 60/40 split rear folding seats and a forward folding front passenger seat.
Our test model also came with the Popular Equipment Group, which adds carpeted floor mats, a remote USB port, and premium wrapped steering wheel. Other interior highlights include Beats Premium Audio, 6-way manual front seats, power windows, and a 12-volt auxiliary power outlet.
Whether you’re stuck in traffic or heading to the mountains for the weekend, the 500X is ready to keep you comfy and entertained for the journey ahead.
2018 FIAT 500X Pop Performance
Under the hood of every 2018 500X Pop FWD is a capable 1.4L MultiAir Turbo engine, but our test model came upgraded with the optional 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir 2 engine. This peppy four cylinder motor utilizes the second-generation MultiAir system to deliver 180 horsepower while also reducing exhaust emissions.
Throttle response and acceleration are much improved over the early model years, thanks to updated programming and engineering of the 9-speed automatic transmission. This fully electronic transmission provides confident and seamless shifts across all operating conditions, whether you’re launching from a stop or traveling on the highway. The wide gear ratio spread also helps the 500X stay in its power band, and achieves an EPA estimated fuel economy of 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway**.
In terms of driving, the 500X offers a sportier experience than one would expect. The steering wheel provides great feedback, and the vehicle’s characteristics closely resemble that of a sedan. There’s very minimal body roll, and it’s quick to respond to driver inputs.
The main contributor to these athletic driving dynamics is an independent suspension system that features MacPherson struts and KONI Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology. The FSD system automatically adjusts damping strength based on current driving conditions, providing firmer suspension when you’re zipping around, or allowing more movement for smooth cruising.
These advanced and thoughtful features undoubtedly make the 2018 500X a versatile vehicle for just about every occasion.
2018 FIAT 500X Pop Safety
The 2018 500X Pop comes with up to 70 available active and passive safety features, an impressive offering for a vehicle with such a low starting price.

Our test model also came equipped with ParkSense Rear Park-Assist system as part of the available Popular Equipment Group.
