A Closer Look: The 2017 Lincoln Continental

The new Lincoln Continental Concept wowed showgoers at the 2015 New York Auto Show in Spring 2016, and almost a year later, the car is now headed to production and dealers nationwide. The hope is that this new version of the legendary Continental luxury sedan can revive the Lincoln brand and have it be taken more seriously as a competitor in the luxury brand segment. Today, we take a closer look at what makes the new 2017 Lincoln Continental so special and why it’s so important to the Ford-owned luxury brand.

While many may think that the 2017 Lincoln Continental is the first model in the brand’s lineup to carry its new fresh design language, that is not the case. It is actually the 2017 Lincoln MKZ sedan which is the first model out of the gates to carry the brand’s new elegant design language – nonetheless, it was inspired by the Lincoln Continental Concept itself.

Let’s start off with the exterior design. You will notice the bold and elegant new signature grille that kicks-off the overall design language for the new Continental. The side profile also offers a strong and luxurious look with the rear sloping down almost like a four-door-coupe – a design attribute that has become quite popular with luxury sedans.

Another major highlight on the 2017 Lincoln Continental sedan is the optional panoramic sunroof that covers nearly the entire roof area, providing a strong contrast between the body color and the dark roof.

Take a seat inside and you’ll definitely notice this isn’t just a rebadged Ford vehicle. No, sir. The new 2017 Lincoln Continental features all the bells-and-whistles and luxury appointments you would expect from a car of this class. One major highlight is the brand’s new Perfect Position Seat. Lincoln says that the seats have been inspired by those found in private jets and can be adjusted to your liking in up to 30 ways. Front seat passengers get to enjoy a bunch of tech features including the new Sync 3 infotainment system, which is standard on the Lincoln Continental and offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Optionally, the front seats can be had heated or ventilated as well as massaging seats.

Of course, the fun isn’t only available to front-seat passengers. Rear seat passengers get to enjoy their own heated and ventilated massaging and reclining seats, generous leg room, their very own audio and climate controls and much more.

So what is the new 2017 Lincoln Continental powered by? Well, besides a naturally aspirated 3.7 liter V6 and a 2.7 liter turbo V6, the top-of-the-line model carries an outstanding and Lincoln-exclusive 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6 engine that is capable of pumping out 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The 3.7 liter and the 2.7 liter can be ordered with front or all-wheel-drive while the 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6 can only be ordered with all-wheel-drive standard. All engines come mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission along with driver-selectable modes including Normal, Comfort and Sport. The Lincoln Continental also gets the brand’s new and first Dynamic Torque Vectoring system. The system helps transfer the torque to a specific rear wheel when taking sharp turns through corners, which helps provide better handling and confidence during spirited driving.

So is the Lincoln Continental going to change the game for the brand? We certainly believe so! The 2017 Lincoln Continental goes on sale this fall. Pricing and exact availability will be announced at a later date. Visit your nearby AutoNation Lincoln dealership to learn more.
