2017 Dodge Journey GT AWD Test Drive Review

There are a ton of mid-size crossovers on the market right now, but there’s only one that offers unmatched value and performance within the segment: the 2017 Dodge Journey.

This year, the Journey GT takes over as the top trim for the model line, replacing the outgoing Journey R/T.

Find out why Dodge’s popular three-row crossover is the perfect solution for any active family, with a closer look at our 2017 Journey GT AWD test model.

2017 Dodge Journey GT AWD Exterior

The 2017 Dodge Journey GT stands strong and confident with timeless styling and Dodge’s signature design cues.

Sculpted lines outline the Journey’s crossover form-factor, starting with the instantly-recognizable “split crosshair” grille, which has been blacked-out as part of the optional Blacktop Package. This popular styling package also gave our test model black roof rails, gloss black exterior mirrors and fascia applique, as well as black 19-inch aluminum wheels. These dramatic dark accents added an aggressive and athletic feel to complement the Redline 2k paint found on our test model.

At the rear, “ring of fire” LED taillights and a body-colored roof spoiler finish off the Journey’s sport-inspired design.

Other exterior features include dual bright exhaust tips, fog lamps, and black headlamp bezels.

2017 Dodge Journey GT AWD Interior

Utility is the key theme of the Journey’s spacious interior, with available 3-row seating, flexible cargo storage options, and plenty of legroom for all passengers.

In our test model, every seat was wrapped in soft Capri leather with red accent stitching, and featured a luxurious and comfortable design. Front passengers are treated to heated seats while the second and third row enjoy individual climate zones and stadium-style seating.

When it comes to in-car entertainment, the Radio 8.4 system delivers everything you could ever want or need while on the road through a vibrant and responsive 8.4-inch touchscreen display. This is where you’ll find satellite radio, navigation, phone connectivity, vehicle settings, travel apps, and more. You can control Radio 8.4 with buttons on the steering wheel or with voice commands — redundant climate and radio controls are also located on the dashboard in case you prefer a more tactile method.

The 2017 Journey GT can seat seven passengers with the optional third row, or transform to offer 67 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats and front passenger seat are folded flat. There’s also in-floor storage in the second row, which can double as drink coolers — simply add ice and your favorite beverages!

You’ll really feel at home inside the Journey GT, surrounded by comfortable appointments, a power sunroof, power outlets for your devices, and a six-speaker Alpine sound system.

2017 Dodge Journey GT AWD Performance

Under the hood of our 2017 Journey GT test model is an award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that produces 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Power is smoothly and efficiently delivered to the wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Pentastar V6 applies power in a linear manner, giving the Journey a responsive and predictable characteristic that’s ideal for comfortably transporting your family or fragile cargo, and can also tow up to 2,500 pounds. The available all-wheel drive (AWD) system provides more stability and grip on low-traction terrain, and switches to front-wheel drive during normal driving for increased fuel efficiency.

Our Journey GT test model came standard with a high-performance suspension that’s been tuned for a firmer ride, making the sporty crossover handle more like a traditional sedan. During normal cruising, the Journey GT is quiet and compliant, and makes for a great long-distance touring vehicle.

Fuel economy for the 2017 Dodge Journey GT is an EPA estimated 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway**.
