Explore the finer details of Audi’s newest RS offering with a closer look at our 2017 Audi RS 3 Sedan 2.5T quattro test model.
2017 Audi RS 3 Sedan Exterior
If the badging didn’t already give it away, the RS 3 sedan’s aggressive styling and athletic proportions leave no doubt that this vehicle’s top priority is performance.
Up front, wider fenders flank Audi’s signature Singleframe grille, which acts as the focal point for the RS 3-specific front fascia. A matte aluminum optic front blade outlines wide air vents on the lower bumper, while full LED headlights follow the angular lines emanating from the black mesh grille.
More matte aluminum can be found on the exterior side mirror housings as well as around the side windows, adding a nice accent to our test model’s Ara Blue crystal paint. The RS 3 sedan’s pronounced beltline sweeps towards the rear and transitions to LED taillights with dynamic turn signals, just below the body-colored rear lip spoiler.
Our test model also came equipped with the optional Dynamic package, adding 19-inch titanium-finished 5-arm-blade wheels, along with red brake calipers and a black-tipped sport exhaust system for additional visual impact and performance.
From the quattro script in the grille to the rear lower diffuser, it’s these sporty details that help the RS 3 sedan tell a different story — you’re going to want to hang on tight for this ride!
2017 Audi RS 3 Sedan Interior
Performance-focused styling continues throughout the interior of the RS 3 sedan, enhancing the luxurious design and amenities that Audi is known for.
Premium materials like leather, Alcantara, aluminum, and carbon fiber greet the driver and passengers as they enter the cabin. Fine Nappa leather with blue contrast stitching cover all seating surfaces, while the driver is treated to a leather/Alcantara flat-bottom sport steering wheel and Alcantara RS shift knob.
Giving us a glimpse of the future, our test model featured the available Technology package, which replaces the traditional instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch full-digital “virtual cockpit” display, and adds GPS navigation along with Audi’s MMI touch system that recognizes handwriting.
For the rest of the passengers, a 7-inch center display delivers a multitude of entertainment and connectivity options, including Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and more, all of which can be controlled with the intuitive MMI system or via voice commands. The available Audi connect service enhances the driving experience with online traffic information, weather updates, fuel prices, streaming music, and even Twitter alerts.
Other interior highlights on our test model include illuminated front door sills, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, and RS carbon decorative inlays.
With so many available amenities to enjoy, being stuck in traffic might turn out to be the best part of your day.
2017 Audi RS 3 Sedan Performance
Those looking for a thrilling driving experience won’t be disappointed with the 2017 RS 3 sedan’s 5-cylinder 2.5-liter turbocharged engine that produces 400 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. Its unique 1-2-4-5-3 firing pattern also produces a satisfying exhaust note that can be enhanced by opening the active exhaust valves using Audi Drive Select.
Rounding out the powertrain is a standard seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission that takes advantage of the impressive low-end torque to deliver you from 0 – 60 mph in a staggering 3.9 seconds. The gear changes are swift and smooth, and the transmission now features launch control for the most efficient application of power from a stand-still.
A new reinforced quattro system (all-wheel drive) features RS-specific tuning with no preset torque distribution and the ability to send almost all of its power to the rear wheels for true sports car-like handling characteristics. Audi Drive Select makes its return with four drive modes — comfort, auto, dynamic and individual — and utilizes Audi magnetic ride for adjustable damper control. You’ll also find exclusive tuning for electronic stability control as well as power steering, which offers the best handling and feedback without requiring excess driver effort.
Fuel economy for the 2017 Audi RS 3 Sedan is an EPA estimated 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway**.
