Why the Ford Focus RS is White Hot & Viral

Ah, Ford Focus RS. Star of track and road. Legions are in love with this performance hatchback. So why’s it so viral? Maybe it’s your outstanding 350 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of turbocharged torque from what some would call a modest 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, beating out some serious V6 and V8 powerhouses.

Maybe it’s your four driving modes: Normal, Sport, Track, Drift. In Drift mode, you can drift through turns at the track as a result of the AWD system delivering more torque to the rear axle. Or maybe its your super-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires – tires you eat for breakfast and smile at wistfully (and dare we say—with pride?) as you replace them.

But what makes the Focus RS so special? If you had to pick just one thing. Our bets are on the Ford motor company’s ace in the hole: the GKN torque-vectoring AWD system. This technology was designed exclusively for the RS by the juggernaut, GKN Automotive, a leading global provider of driveline technologies.

Sublime control and rapid acceleration are the byproducts of torque evenly distributed to the rear wheels, seemingly intuitively, before you even know you need it. Breaking it down further, the Ford Focus RS is using the GKN AWD system with a Power Transfer Unit (PTU) and Torque Vectoring Rear Drive Module (RDM), with the assistance of the Twinster twin clutch system. Here’s the gamechanger: this creates the ability to distribute torque to each of the rear tires individually, as well as at the same time, across its total speed range spectrum.

You can literally feel this fierce power – overspeeding at work – in the steering wheel. You have to drive it to believe it. We can circulate hundreds of viral video of the high-performance driving experience, which we appreciate as we get a better sense through the visual, but nothing compares to actually testing the Ford Focus RS on the open road yourself.

Find out for yourself why the Focus RS is the performance hatchback that changes everything. Get in line to test-drive the 2017 Ford Focus RS at your local AutoNation Ford dealership.
