When the RAM Rebel TRX concept broke cover at the State Fair of Texas back in 2016, there was a lot of excitement about a possible Raptor competitor from Ma Mopar. And now, our friends over at Motor Authority have noticed something which indicates a beefy new off-road beast could be right around the corner. Turns out, the new truck is listed as an “upcoming vehicle” on the company’s official website — which is a pretty big jump from “concept.”
Now, given how production-ready the concept looked when we got our first looks at it, we can’t say this comes as terribly surprising. Ford and it’s fantastically capable Raptor have had the souped up pickup segment all to itself for the last few years, and we’re guessing that RAM is fiending for a piece of that action. That said, any competition from the company is going to have its work cut out for it if it truly wants to unseat the Blue Oval’s weapons-grade F-150. Every outlet that’s tested it has been effusive in praise for what some have called a factory trophy truck.
But one place where the RAM Rebel TRX shouldn’t have any trouble competing is the power department. Because when it debuted in concept form, it was boasting a whopping 575 ponies. For those keeping score, that’s a 125 more than Ford is getting out of the latest V-6 EcoBoost, and since it’s basically a detuned Hellcat engine, Dodge left plenty of power on the table for aftermarket companies to exploit.
Now, we’re not sure exactly when the RAM Rebel TRX will arrive at your local AutoNation RAM dealer, but if we had to bet, we’d say it’ll be sometime toward the end of the summer, so buyers will be able to catch the end of ‘wheeling season. More news when we have it.
