The Jaguar E-PACE is the new compact SUV by the iconic British manufacturer, whose history is ripe with legendary vehicles. After all, a Jaguar XJ has long been the British Prime Minister’s car of choice, and fans of the movie Harold and Maude no doubt recognize the featured 1971 Jaguar E-Type hearse.
Over the years, Jaguar has broken performance records and has never lost its hip factor, which was revitalized with its scene-stealing C-X75 supercar in 2015’s bond flick Spectre—stole the thunder from right under the Aston Martin DB10.
Although the C-X75 never made it into production, what is in production and white hot right now is the E-PACE. While the E-PACE may not be a supercar, it certainly is superbly-crafted and sits pretty in its slot below the F-PACE. It’s smaller, more agile, and the base model includes a sizable list of premium features standard. And the price is right too, as it starts below $40,000. That’s where the E-PACE shines. Seriously, who wouldn’t want to drive a vehicle that is preferred by royalty?
The driving is good too, as we wouldn’t expect any less from the iconic brand. There are three trim levels, with two turbocharged 2.0-liter engines available, the top being the 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that produces 246 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard.
Although the mpg numbers haven’t been released yet, the E-PACE offers an option that was engineered to improve fuel economy: When cruising, the transmission disengages the rear axle, and by doing so, diminishes mechanical friction in the drivetrain.
The E-PACE comes with a high tech cockpit that wraps around the driver, making you the center of attention with effortless reach to the controls you need to helm the vehicle. You’ll also get:
- Signature LED head lights and rear lights
- Fully independent suspension system
- 10-inch tablet style touchscreen
- Deep center console with removable cup holders
- 4G Wi-Fi for up to eight devices is available
- Optional 12.3-inch heads-up display for navigation, radio & driver’s aids
Jaguar has also gone ahead and made some high-tech safety features standard with the E-PACE. These include automatic emergency braking, driver monitoring, and lane keep assist. Front and rear parking aids also lend a hand in parallel and perpendicular parking. The only thing the Jaguar E-PACE can’t do is halt traffic so you can use the aforementioned features to flawlessly slip into tight parking spots. But who knows? This is Jaguar we’re dealing with, maybe a feature like that is underway.
The MSRP for the base 2018 Jaguar E-PACE starts at $38,600*
