Head to Heads & Advice

How Hardcore is the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor?

The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor is hardcore enough to soar from 0-60 in 5.1 seconds. She’s also lost weight with her sturdy yet lighter aluminum construction; she’s now less 404 pounds to a leaner, meaner 5,696 pounds. What’s more, Ford has gone ahead and replaced the 6.2L V-8 that powered the last generation of Raptors with a 3.5L twin-turbo V-6, with direct and port injection, generating 450-hp and 510 lb-ft of torque.

What’s not to love?

There’s a lot more, it turns out. Another crowd-pleasing feature of the hardcore 2017 F-150 Raptor is a new 10-speed automatic transmission. AWD comes standard with a locking center differential that is sometimes described as clutch-based torque-on-demand; what it does is apply torque in the front or rear, as you need it. It’s technically an AWD/4WD hybrid with six drive modes.

The six drive mode settings of the Raptor include Sport, which is the preferred mode for barreling through daily tasks and errands close to home. For your treks out to the desert, mountains, snow, mud, beach, et. al., there’s Normal, Baja, Mud/Sand, Snow/Weather, and Rock Crawling. Also new is a performance suspension with bump stops and a nine-state bypass damping system to help keep your undercarriage intact.

The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor comes in two configurations: SuperCab and SuperCrew. You gain an extra 11.9 inches over the SuperCab with the SuperCrew. But both are constructed of
beauty, brains and muscle. Standard with the new F-150 Raptor are sports seats, Fox racing dampers, BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, piston-cooling oil jets, climate control, and
the latest version of Sync 3 which has been significantly improved and upgraded over previous generations of the Ford infotainment system. You can control all of your media and communication needs from high-tech LED screens. Make use of the 360-degree camera to gain unobstructed views of the terrain or traffic while driving, and behold the mixed blessing of sheer beauty and power that the Ford Raptor is. There’s an elegance to this beast-truck we’ve grown to love, down to the nitty-gritty details and back up to her oversized grille, jacked-up tires, and hulking presence.

But don’t just take our word for it. Take action today. It’s painless to set up a test drive at your local AutoNation Ford dealership, STAT.
