Honda came in hot and heavy at SEMA Show 2016, displaying an array of modified vehicles showing what is possible after your Honda leaves the showroom floor. Everything from a Sonic the Hedgehog Civic Sedan, complete with gaming system in the trunk, to a fresh off the racetrack 600 horsepower Global Rally Cross Civic, dirt and all. But let’s be honest, the star of the show was the highly anticipated Honda Civic Type R which made its North American debut.
The nearly 20 year wait for an American Honda Type R is finally over! Making its North American debut at this year’s SEMA Show 2016, the Honda Civic Type-R wowed the crowds by showing off a brushed aluminum effect finish. Details are limited, but Honda has confirmed the car will be turbocharged and possess over 300 horsepower. Appearing in the new 5-door Hatchback body, the Civic Type-R is set to be in direct competition with the Ford Focus RS and Subaru STi, respectively.
Though confirmed for a mid-2017 release, the car shown is still being deemed a ‘prototype’. We certainly hope the production vehicle will receive these gorgeous 20-inch rims along with the massive Brembo brake calipers.
Honda also showcased what is capable in the aftermarket if racing isn’t quite your thing. Debuting this summer at Comic-Con, Honda teamed up with the legendary video game creators over at SEGA to create a unique spin on a custom Civic Sedan. The Sonic the Hedgehog Civic was one of the more fun builds at this year’s SEMA Show. They even allowed guests to partake in a round of ring-grabbing by the lovable digital rodent.
“If Honda does not race, there is no Honda.” Legendary words echoed over many decades from Honda’s founder, Soichiro Honda. Since the beginning, Honda has been synonymous with racing. Everything from motorcycles, to drag racing, to endurance racing. If you can go fast and compete- you should. We’re lucky to be in the middle of a resurgence to the legacy that is Honda Racing. They made it very clear at SEMA Show 2016 that motor sports have not been forgotten, and they displayed this in a number of enthusiast minded race cars. First being the 2017 Civic Coupe Racing Prototype. A fully gutted and modified street car designed for the circuit.
600 horsepower Honda Civic has a nice sound to it, doesn’t it? What if that same Civic did 0-60 mph in under 2 seconds? Then, what if you were to drive it on a track of both dirt and asphalt? That’s the recipe for a good time and one of our favorite means of motor sport- Global Rallycross. Fresh off the season finale in Los Angeles, Honda brought us their rallycross monster without bathing it. Honestly, we didn’t mind.
If all those crazily modified Honda vehicles were just a bit too much for you, they also displayed a couple of lightly modified yet extremely tasteful variants from their 2017 lineup. A Civic Coupe Touring in a beautiful shade of Aegean Blue, along with a mean looking Ridgeline Black Edition in, well, black, were included.
While you won’t yet be able to pickup the Civic Type-R, and the Global Rallycross Civic might be a bit too extreme, we’re excited to hep you find the Honda that best suits you! Visit your local AutoNation Honda dealership today.
