A Concours d’Elegance, from the French, means a “competition of elegance.” Since the 17th century, this phrase has been used to refer to a gathering of cars that would otherwise live quietly behind well-insulated walls. At one time you could expect a Concours d’Elegance to consist of horse-drawn carriages, each vying with the other for the title of most prestigious; most elegant. Today? Meet the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a fine continuance of a tradition started in Paris with some of the earliest modes of transportation.
In less than three weeks, Pebble Beach and the Monterey Peninsula in California will become the epicenter of the motoring universe for almost seven days. The first Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was held in 1950, and by 1953 the show had over 100 entrants. In 2014 a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti Coupe won the Concours’ top prize, a title coveted by collector vehicles globally, and now the show is recognized as one of the most prestigious in the world.
The Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach will be held on August 20, with the judging starting at 8:30 am. Vehicle entrants are limited to just a total of 200, and those 200 are some of the most prized collector cars… in the world. Cars are judged on their historical accuracy, their style, and their technical merit. But as the celebration stretches across the length of a week, there are many other events as well.
Some of these events include the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance, Pebble Beach RetroAuto, Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum, Pebble Beach Motoring Classic, and the Pebble Beach Auctions. There will furthermore be new car reveals and specific exhibits of breathtakingly rare vehicles.
This year you can expect to see the Isotta Fraschinis– the first and last chassis made, as well as the Tipo 8s- featured at the Concours d’Elegance. American Dream Cars of the 1960s will also be there, including the Reactor accompanied by nine other one-off builds. The Classic Car Forum has also recently opened registration, and is available to the public- reserve your seat now!
While the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance may be all about the classic and the timeless, it doesn’t forget the future in its focus on the past. The event has also been known to showcase some of the most exciting concept and upcoming vehicles of the year. This year the list of concept cars includes: Acura Precision Concept, VLF Destino V8, Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato, Audi R8 V10 Spyder, BMW 2002 Hommage, and the Cadillac Escala Concept.
