Dodge’s Hellcat motor is unhinged, snarling proof that there’s no kill like overkill. Without question, the supercharged V-8 is one of the craziest production engines ever built, and as soon as its existence was confirmed, enthusiasts were hoping Ma Mopar would get around to stuffing it into a Jeep. So the 2018 Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is confirmation dreams can come true.
In case you were curious, the Trackhawk won’t be cheap. The starting price will be $86,995*. But buyers will get a lot of performance for their money.
For those who haven’t been paying attention, the 6.2-liter monster at the heart of the Trackhawk also provides motivation for Hellcat versions of the Challenger and Charger, and a heavily reworked version lives under the hood of the dragstrip-slaying Demon. In Hellcat trim, it makes a whopping 707 horsepower, and in the Demon, it pumps out a totally bonkers 840 ponies.
Now initially, some enthusiasts thought the Hellcat engine might need to be slightly tempered for Jeep duty, so the four-wheel-drive system wasn’t immediately twisted into metal shavings. But fortunately, Dodge massively overbuilt the running gear, and the 2018 Grand Cherokee Trackhawk will have the full 707-horsepower on tap. Apparently, Jeep’s engineers thought a two-wheel drive version would be cheating.
The press material says this is the quickest SUV ever, and we have no reason to doubt it, as the big Jeep will sprint from zero to 60 mph in a brisk 3.5 seconds, and run the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds. To put those numbers into perspective? That means this full-size SUV is faster than a 2017 Corvette Grand Sport. And for something with the aerodynamics of a brick, the 180-mph top speed is unreal. Fortunately, a set of massive Brembo brakes — with 15.75-inch rotors up front, and 13.78-inch rotors in back — will haul the rig from 60 mph to zero in a tidy 144 feet.
If you’re looking to get your hands on this crazy creation, we’d recommend heading down to your local AutoNation dealer pronto, as most Trackhawks will be spoken for before they even leave the assembly line. So get your order in today.
