2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Will be an Eight-Second Car

* 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet will be built to honor 50th anniversary of original Cobra Jet
* Not street legal, intended only for use at the drag strip
* Ford says it will run the quarter mile in eight seconds at upwards of 150mph
* Only 68 examples will be produced

This morning, Ford announced that there will be a new version of the vaunted Cobra Jet factory drag car. And while there were no specific power numbers announced, the company did say it would be the fastest version ever, and capable of covering the quarter mile in a blindingly quick eight seconds. Motivation will be provided by a heavily modified version of the Ford’s Coyote V-8, which will have the displacement increased to 5.2-liters and force fed by a supercharger.

For those wondering why Ford is putting so much effort to such a limited-production machine, this quote from the official press release will shed some light:

“From the very first Mustang Cobra Jets dominating the 1968 NHRA Winternationals to our modern-day Cobra Jet racers, the Ford Performance Parts team continues to build the Cobra Jet brand based on its success at the track over five decades,” said Eric Cin, global director, Ford Performance Parts. “That, in turn, has inspired generations of Mustang fans to create their own performance machines for the street.”

As far a creature comforts go? There won’t be any. Since it’s designed for the drags, the 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet will be gutted to race spec, and feature a National Hot Rod Association-compliant roll cage. There will also be plenty of other go-fast bits, including a beefy solid rear axle, drag-spec coil-over shocks, Weld racing wheels, and Racetech FIA chairs — though we bet most Cobra Jets will only sport one. Exterior sheet metal will be painted either Race Red or Oxford White.

If you want to get your hands on one of these vicious snakes, it would be a good idea to get on a list at your local AutoNation Ford dealer, as they’re sure to be sold out before they even start production. But if you’re looking for a street-legal Mustang for daily driving duty? They’ll be happy to help with that too!
