To answer the question everyone is going to have? Nope, Honda will not sell you a Civic Type R pickup. “Project P,” as it was dubbed internally, was basically done just for fun, and to possibly take a run at the notorious Nurburgring — which is a whole different level of fun.
Here’s what project lead Alyn James had to say about why the Civic Type R pickup exists:
We have a special projects division at the factory in Swindon and this project was a fantastic opportunity for the team to show just what their creative minds could do. The passion that our engineers have for Honda is shown in our latest creation and we are even considering taking it to the Nurburgring to see if we can take the record for the fastest front wheel drive pickup truck!
For the record, we think that’s a perfectly awesome justification for this bad boy’s creation. Because while it will never see mainstream production, this is exactly the kind of vehicle that inspires engineers to put their heart and soul into the kind of vehicles that will.
And for anyone who was upset that one of Honda’s pocket rockets got cut up to give it a cargo bed, there’s some solace to be taken in the fact that this was a pre-production example. Most of the time, those machines wind up crushed, as companies often don’t give them VINs, and even if they do, the lawyers deem releasing them into the wild to be a liability.
The good news is that if you’re looking for something with the same high-strung powertrain, just head to your local AutoNation Honda dealer. Like many enthusiast cars, examples of the Civic Type R were scarce when they first arrived on our shores, but now you should have no problem securing your very own Honda hot hatch.
