To date, Ford has released just a few details about the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 — most notably that’ll it’ll have over 700 horsepower. But now we have an unadulterated aerial shot of the Blue Oval’s forthcoming tire slayer, and predictably, it looks pretty awesome.
While we’re sure we’re missing some details thanks to the 30,000-foot view, it actually provides a great shot of the giant intake which will feed air to the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 living under the hood. There’s also a substantial carbon fiber rear wing, and some dive planes — presumably also made out of carbon fiber — sprouting off the front clip. Both these aero bits are in keeping with the Mustang’s evoloution from straight-line muscle car into something that’s as at home on a track or set of twisty roads as it is at the drag strip.
Of course, if you’re looking to look for something that’s purpose built to deliver low times in the quarter mile, there’s always the ferocious Cobra Jet model. But while Ford promises it’ll be an eight-second car right from the factory, the big catch is only 68 examples will be produced — and none of them will be street legal.
As far as transmissions for the GT500 go, we don’t expect any surprises. If you’re lucky enough to be checking option boxes on one of these sure-to-be wicked machines, you’ll be able select either a ten-speed auto or six-speed stick. And if recent performance tests of similar machines is an indication, the automatic will offer a slight performance edge, thought we don’t it’ll be enough to sway any die-hard three-pedal folks.
Obviously, there’s still plenty of learn about the 2020 GT500, but one thing we can be certain of is that they’re sure to be a hot ticket when they arrive at your local AutoNation Ford dealer. Until then, check out the teaser clip below and stay tuned!
