ALL 2018 Ford Mustangs Get A New Burn Rubber Button

Burnouts just never get old …” – Vaughn Gittin Jr., Ford Formula Drift Champion.

Ford is giving us a gift that will keep on giving. It may almost feel like an early Christmas present. A new performance-enhancing feature will come standard on 2018 Ford Mustangs that was once only available on the V8-powered Mustang GT. It’s called the Line-Lock feature, available with Mustang EcoBoost® and it comes standard with all 2018 pony cars. Transmission choices include a swift-shifting 10-speed automatic or a six-speed manual with a twin-disc clutch—which when expertly engaged, work fluidly with the burn rubber button.

The electronic line-lock feature locks the front brakes for no reason other than the thrill of it—to enable the rear wheels to burn rubber—and to generate feelings among drivers of unadulterated joy. For the amateur drag racers among us, this track-only (nudge-nudge-wink-wink) feature has the power to reawaken our inner rebellious adolescents—who’ve remained dormant, but have always been there with us—along for the ride.

Watch the magic happen as drift champion Vaughn Gitten Jr. solicits random people to experience the thrill of the burnout using the Line-Lock feature at Irwindale Speedway in Southern California.

The way it works is—drivers take hold of two switches on the steering wheel that activate the electronic line-lock button as displayed on the available super-high-tech 12-inch digital display. Step 1: Build pressure for up to 15 seconds. Step 2: Driver hits the throttle which spins the rear wheels while the car stays in place, emitting a glorious smoke cloud, and of course—improving performance on the road with the traction gained.

The entire burnout experience is heightened in the visual presentation included in the available 12-inch digital display. You’ll know when the burn rubber button is engaged by an animated wheel spinning as a cloud of smoke builds around it. Good times!

In addition to the new burn rubber button coming standard on all 2018 Mustangs, the iconic American muscle car will get a facelift and some body work done, including under the hood. The end result will be a Mustang that is more attractive, with more lean muscle mass and excess fat trimmed. Part of this optimized, svelte new look is a vented hood with new front and rear fascias. Fresh cosmetic touches include new skin colors, carbon fiber trims, and retouched chrome finishes in the cabin.

The redesigned 2018 Mustang will also sit lower to the ground and come with 10 new wheel choices. New technology includes the available 12-inch digital instrument panel, driver memory preferences, and new digital assist features, including Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. Additional performance-enhancing upgrades include new engine choices, an available optimized MagneRide™ suspension, and enhanced valve performance exhaust (Mustang GT).

Get to the nearest AutoNation Ford dealership to get behind the wheel once they arrive, later this year.
