With the Detroit Auto Show set to kick off next week, the Blue Oval has dropped an interesting bit of news—a Ford Edge ST is on the way. And from what we can tell? This machine looks like it’s going to be a Goldilocks-perfect blend of hot hatch and crossover. It’s like a late Christmas gift to enthusiasts, and we can’t wait to get our hands on one.
Under the hood will be a 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 pumping out 335 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque, and power will be pushed to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic. That means it’s packing 55 more ponies than the current fastest flavor of the Edge, and a whopping 130 more pound-feet of twist, so it’s not like Ford just slapped on the ST badge and called it a day.
Given the pedigree of previous ST models—think the Fiesta and the Focus—we expect there will be some tweaks to the suspension too.
Unlike the rally-ready Focus RS, there won’t be anything as dramatic as drift mode, but Ford says the traction control nannies will offer more wiggle room than on standard Edge models, and there will also be a sport setting to help take advantage of the extra grunt. While we likely won’t know any performance figures until after the official reveal in Motor City, the ST will also come with unique 21-inch wheels, and have options for beefy brakes and super-sticky Pirelli P Zero tires. For those not familiar with Italian shoes, that’s the kind of rubber you’re likely to find on Ferraris and Lamborghinis—so it should make punting the hot rod Edge through corners a blast.
The Sync infotainment system, which has already been praised for its ease of use, will also get a significant upgrade, thanks to integration of Amazon’s Alexa voice recognition. Check out the video below for more info on the Edge ST, and expect to see it in the showroom of your local AutoNation Ford dealer this summer.
