There are some amazing things being done with technology. And to the delight of gearheads and car enthusiasts everywhere, much of the technology today is being used to make our cars connect, travel and perform better. Clearly, we’ve only scratched the surface of what is possible for the continued merging of cars and technology. Let’s turn our concentration to the wildly wonderful world of engines, and look at 3 powerful engines in 2018.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, just a few of the notable engines that caught our eye, for one reason or another.
The All-New 2018 Lexus LS
Not only did the benchmark Lexus sedan get a new design this year, there’s also a sporty model and a hybrid Lexus LS available in 2018. The all-new Lexus LS is built on the same high performance platform as the LC with a first-time-ever 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 engine that generates 415 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. Another first, and not just for Lexus, the 2018 LS is equipped with the world’s first ten-speed automatic transmission.
Notable Mention: The Lexus LS includes Kiriko cut glass ornamentation, which is part of its distinctive Takumi craftsmanship.
The Lexus LS 500h is the hybrid model with a full hybrid powertrain and a 3.5L V6 Dual VVT-I conventional gas engine and two electric motor, and a Lexus Multi-Stage Hybrid System; altogether they generate 354 horsepower. It uses a compact lithium-ion hybrid battery with a multistage transmission that allows for fluid acceleration and torque.
The Lexus 500 F-SPORT has a coupe-like profile that turns heads with its bold presence and knocks it off the charts on the streets and puts you firmly in control of every move made from bolstered sport seats with LFA-inspired gauges. From its Spindle grille down to its distinct 20-inch alloy wheels, the prior V8 of the sporty sedan has been replaced with the more efficient high-performance V-6, taking you from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.

2018 Range Rover Velar
We include the Range Rover Velar in our list of 3 powerful engines in 2018 not necessarily for how fast you can get from 0-60, but for the innovation behind the engine. What is so special about the new Range Rover engines? They are an engine type called Ingenium. Ingenium engines are the most groundbreaking and new engines crafted by Land Rover. Performance and fuel economy are improved with a Continuous Inlet Variable Valve Lift System along with a lighter, more fuel-efficient construction.
2.0L 247 horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine
3.0L 380 horsepower V6 engine
2.0L 180 horsepower turbodiesel four-cylinder engine
The eight-speed automatic transmission helps achieve that classic streamlined and brisk acceleration that is one of the hallmarks of driving a Land Rover Range Rover, a shoo-in entry to our 3 powerful engines in 2018.

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Coupe
From the performance racing division of Mercedes-Benz comes the 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Coupe with a handcrafted 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 biturbo engine that can go from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, with 577 horsepower. Performance is enhanced in part by strategic placement of the V8’s twin turbos in the “V” area of the engine. Due to this placement, there is almost no pressure loss or lag. The seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission doesn’t hurt, in fact, it moves things along nicely, and helps to usher in yet another addition to our 3 powerful engines in 2018.
