Outstanding Luxury: 2019 Volvo S90 T8 AWD Inscription Test Drive

The successful XC90 SUV has cemented the fact that Volvo is truly becoming one of the top contenders in the luxury game. We’ve gone through almost all of the new Volvo lineup and have been impressed over and over again.

We recently spent some time with the new 2018 Volvo S90 T8 eAWD Plug-in Hybrid Inscription and were absolutely dazzled. While the S90 may not be as popular as its legendary German rivals like the E-Class and the 5-Series, the Volvo S90 does an outstanding job at taking on the sports sedan segment with elegance and exciting performance numbers. The best part is that Volvo does this without desiring to be mentioned amongst this crowd.

2019 Volvo S90 T8 AWD Inscription Exterior

We definitely love the exterior design language of Volvo S90, which picks sophistication over sportiness. Unlike its rivals in this segment that try to go for a beefy design and badges that scream “I’m the quicker version of my siblings,” the S90 shows up to the start line as a real sleeper. That’s not to say that the exterior design of the Volvo S90 is boring, because it’s anything but that — our favorite exterior design elements by far are the sleek grille and the ‘Thor’ hammer headlamps.

One of the reasons we love the Volvo S90 is the massive legroom for rear passengers — but there’s a clear reason for that. While the Volvo S90 competes with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series, it is significantly longer than the two. The Volvo S90 stretches a total of 200.1 inches in length, while its competitors come in at 194 and 195-inches. This allows for a massive 40.4 inches of legroom for rear passengers. The E-Class and 5-Series come in at 35.8 inches, and 36.5 inches respectively.

Overall, Volvo has done a great job of taking the XC90’s stellar design language and translating it into a sedan.

2019 Volvo S90 T8 AWD Inscription Interior

Sitting inside one of the new Volvo’s is a Zen-like experience — especially if you go for the Inscription trim. The 2018 Volvo S90 T8 eAWD Plug-in Hybrid Inscription really takes a giant step ahead of its rivals with Scandinavian luxury and a rear seat that offers an extra 4.5 inches of legroom over cars like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5-Series, and the Audi A6.

The Volvo S90 T8 Inscription comes standard with a lot of luxury and tech including Nappa leather heated and cooled front seats, walnut wood inlays, four-zone climate control, Volvo’s Sensus Navigation system housed in a nine-inch touchscreen display, USB connections, Bluetooth with audio streaming, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and much more.

The $2,250 Convenience Package is nice, but the most exciting option it includes is the 360-degree camera system. We’d alternatively add the $3,450 Luxury Package, which adds heated and cooled rear seats, a cool center armrest for rear passengers, and our personal favorite — massaging front seats. However, if we were to pick only one option, it would have be the $3,200 Bowers & Wilkins 19-speaker sound system. It is by far the best sound system we’ve experienced in any car in recent years. Now, all that will run you north of $72,000* on the Volvo S90 T8 eAWD Plug-in Hybrid Inscription, but if you go for the S90 T6 Inscription with the Luxury Package and the Bowers & Wilkins sound system you’re looking at $66,000**. Take away the Luxury Package and leave the B&W sound system and you’re right below $63,000**. Oh, there is also a crystal shifter by Swedish glass maker Orrefors — because why not?

Power for the 2018 Volvo S90 T8 eAWD Plug-in Hybrid Inscription comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged and supercharged engine that is mated to an 87 horsepower electric motor. Fuel economy for the Volvo S90 T8 comes in at 26/33 mpg* (city/highway).

Overall, we were very pleased with the ride quality of the Volvo S90 T8 eAWD Plug-in Hybrid Inscription which is comfortable on long drives and sporty enough when you pop it into sport mode.
