Edgy Sophistication: 2019 Toyota Avalon Touring Review

With the all-new sporty Camry and the angular CH-R crossover, Toyota is in a bit of resurgence when it comes to exterior design. However, topping those models in our books is the all-new 2019 Toyota Avalon, which made its debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. Since it competes with the likes of the Kia Cadenza and the all-new Nissan Maxima, Toyota had to make sure that the fifth-generation Avalon really advanced its game in the appearances and luxury department.

That said, we spent a week with the fifth-generation 2019 Toyota Avalon and we have to say — Toyota totally nailed it. The all-new Avalon gets a handsome new exterior design language, an updated interior with a long list of standard features, an extraordinary range of safety equipment, and some impressive technology. So let’s take a closer look at the 2019 Toyota Avalon.

2019 Toyota Avalon Touring Exterior

When it comes to the outside, the 2019 Toyota Avalon, like the new Camry, strikes the perfect balance between sophistication and edgy. This is unquestionably the sleekest looking Avalon we’ve ever seen. When compared to the outgoing model, the 2019 Toyota Avalon sits an inch lower in height and a wheelbase that is longer by two inches.

Underpinning the new Toyota Avalon is the brand’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, which also underpins the new 2018 Camry and the current Prius. The wheelbase comes in at 113 inches with an overall length of 196 inches. The width stretches at 73 inches with an overall height of 56.5 inches.

While the whole 2019 Toyota Avalon lineup features a stunning new redesign, it’s the XSE and the Touring models that get the most aggressive attitude. It’s almost as if there are two different Avalon models for 2019, with one being more reserved, and the other living a rebellious lifestyle. Our 2019 Toyota Avalon Touring featured a piano black mesh grille, black gloss wheels, black sideview mirror housings, black headlight bezels, a black trunk lid spoiler, and quad tailpipes. There are also strong character lines all around, a large grille that’s reminiscent of the Lexus spindle grille, and smoked chrome bezel LED headlamps. Even the rear features a muscular look that’s further magnified with connected LED tail lamps in a three-dimensional “aero fin” style.

Overall, the exterior of the 2019 Toyota Avalon stands out in a crowd of large sedans.

When it comes to interior dimensions, the 2019 Toyota Avalon offers ample amount of legroom thanks to its extended length. Legroom for front passengers comes in at 42.1 inches, while rear passengers will appreciate a total of 40.3 inches.

When compared to the outgoing Toyota Avalon models, the new 2019 Toyota Avalon is unquestionably a huge upgrade in terms of luxury, tech, and the overall interior cabin feel.
