Iron First in a Velvet Glove: 2019 Ram 1500 Limited Test

It used to be that the pickup truck was an instrument of utility. They were blue-collar workhorses meant to transport and haul goods and services from point A to point B. However, the last few decades has seen these trucks evolve into lifestyle transportation by incorporating levels of technology and luxury that rival many of today’s high-end automobiles. Case-in-point, this 2019 Ram 1500 Limited Crew Cab 4×4. Not only does it have the nicest interior we’ve ever come across in a full-size pickup, but it’ll tow up to 12,750 pounds when properly equipped, sprint to 60 mph in around seven seconds, take you off-roading, and do it while keeping your rear cooled thanks to the ventilated front seats.

Times have changed, all right. Times have definitely changed.

2019 Ram 1500 Limited Crew Cab 4×4 Exterior

With the half-ton market encompassing the majority of consumer pickup truck sales, getting the exterior design right is paramount. That’s why when Ram unveiled their new 2019 1500, folks had to take a step back — in a good way. With all-new sheet metal and a bold new look, Ram has managed to craft a shape that’s both rugged and elegant, while at the same time elevating pickup truck design. The front end sees sleek LED headlamps that flow nicely into a stylized front grille, along with a sculpted bulge hood with inset 1500 HEMI badging. LED driving lamps are pushed wide to the edges of the front bumper, and overall the 1500 is treated to a more a aerodynamic shape than before, achieving a drag coefficient of just 13.0 CdA. Active grille shutters, along with a class exclusive active air damn, aid in helping the RAM achieve this type of number.

Design enhancements, like the slightly concave exterior door panels which direct more air around the bed, abound. A large roof-mounted bed lamp doubles as a third brake light, and provides illumination when needed. LED taillights flank a new aluminum tailgate that houses an updated RAM badge, while a chrome bumper with a subtle dual exhaust rounds out the new look.

Where the outside of the new Ram is beautiful, the inside is on an entirely new level. At its heart is that massive, largest-in-class, fully customizable, 12-inch touchscreen. No joke, the TV our my first apartment wasn’t that big. With split-screen capabilities, RAMs new Uconnect 12.0 with navigation offers a combination of pinch-and-zoom technology along with traditional buttons and switches that make it one of the most well thought out and intuitive systems on the market today. Navigation aside, this fully interactive system allows one to monitor and adjust just about every feature the truck has to offer and then some. And while at first we thought that screen would be intrusive, it turns out to be anything but

Big screen aside, the cabin of the 1500 Limited is awash with high-quality materials and design elements that look and feel great. The leather  seats with contrasting white stitching are heated and ventilated, and provide for hours of fatigue-free driving. The premium feel continues with the steering wheel, as it has a nice thickness, and offers a hand warming feature, and then there are the many USB and media device charge ports throughout the cabin. Harman Kardon provides sublime audio, and if you put the heated and ventilated rear seats up, you’re treated to more interior storage room than many large sedans. Better still is that regardless of the amount of technology, luxury, storage and comfort that’s offered here, drivers will still feel like they’re in a burly truck.

As too how the interior designers accomplished that, we’ve no idea, but bless them for doing such a damn good job, as this cabin is unquestionably one of the best in the business.

2019 Ram 1500 Limited Crew Cab 4×4 Performance

So we’ve established that the new Ram 1500 Crew Cab Limited looks amazing both inside and out, but how does it fare in regards to performance? Under the hood is RAM’s tried-and-true 5.7-liter HEMI V8 that pumps out 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 5.7-liter is one of our favorite engines, as it combines usable horsepower and torque regardless of where you’re at in the rev range. Mileage is also respectable and comes in at an EPA rated 15 mpg city, 22 mpg highway and 17 mpg in combined driving.*

Equipped with a 3.92 rear gear, our Ram 1500 Limited was capable of sprinting to 60 mph in about seven seconds, and when properly equipped, it can tow up to 12,750-pounds with a max payload capacity of 2,000-pounds. The inclusion of the four-corner air suspension package on the Limited not only gave the Ram a great ride, but also came in handy when loading and unloading items from the bed, as the RAM can actually be lowered a few inches via a button on the center stack.

The steering in the RAM felt great, and the truck had no problem traversing just about any surface we threw at it. Emergency braking was confidence inspiring, thanks to large 14.9-inch rotors up front, and 14.8-inch rotors out back. For those keeping score, those are the largest in class. The eight-speed transmission was smooth, and never once did we find it hunting for the right gear. That said, the rotary shift dial does take some getting used to.
