There is no doubt that subcompact crossovers are taking over the world. When you take a look at two of the latest offerings by Honda (with the HR-V) and Mazda (with the CX-3) you’ll realize that these tiny utility vehicles are perfect for those that live in urban areas and want to bring along their friends and family for a quick trip to suburbia.
Toyota is another automaker getting into the subcompact crossover segment with their latest model called the CH-R. Besides the dynamic and edgy styling, the 2018 Toyota CH-R offers an enjoyable drive, a variety of standard driver assist technologies and utility that can perfectly fit into your daily life. It’s really the ideal vehicle for millennial buyers that have a radical lifestyle. Let’s take a closer look at the 2018 Toyota CH-R.
2018 Toyota CH-R XLE Premium Exterior
There is no doubt that Toyota went above and beyond when it came to the exterior design of the 2018 Toyota CH-R. Unlike its competitors, the Toyota CH-R abstains from the subtle and humble styling theme for an edgier design with sharp lines, giant headlamps, angular taillights, “Vortex-styled” 18-inch alloy wheels, an aerodynamic rear spoiler, unique rear door handles placed on the C-pillar, and an attractive exterior color lineup.
Our test model, the 2018 Toyota CH-R XLE Premium came with the standard “Silver Knockout Metallic” exterior paint scheme. However, buyers have the choice selecting what Toyota calls the R-Code paint scheme that gives you a white roof that can be combined with three other colors including Radiant Green Mica, Ruby Flare Pearl, and our personal favorite – Blue Eclipse Metallic. All three combinations give the 2018 Toyota CH-R even more character than it already has.
Size wise, the 2018 Toyota CH-R sits on a wheelbase that measures 103.9-inches with an overall length of 171.2-inches. The total width comes in at 70.7-inches with an overall height of 61.6-inches. The ground clearance comes in at 5.9-inches.
When you park the 2018 Toyota CH-R next to the competition, you’ll definitely notice that Toyota was trying to do something a little sharper to appeal to the youthful car buyer that is looking to get their first compact vehicle.
2018 Toyota CH-R XLE Premium Interior
Take a seat inside the 2018 Toyota CH-R and you’ll notice a new stylized cabin that sets it apart from other Toyotas in the automaker’s lineup. Of course, while there is still that excellent Toyota build quality that we’ve come to love and appreciate, the styling of the interior is targeted towards luring younger car shoppers.
Like most automakers these days, the 2018 Toyota CH-R features a central tablet-like display that sticks out of the dash. The 7-inch touchscreen display features all your audio controls, navigation, vehicle information, phone connectivity, and other information. Keep in mind that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not a part of the game here, which we found rather surprising.
Other than that, our 2018 Toyota CH-R XLE Premium came standard with Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a 4.2-inch color Multi-Information Display right in front of the driver, a backup camera, and a range of driver assist technologies that we’ll get into in the later part of our review.
Interior space wise, the 2018 Toyota CH-R offers 43.5-inches of legroom for front row passengers and 31.7-inches of legroom for rear passengers. Cargo volume comes in at 19 cubic feet behind the second row but can be expanded to 36.5 cubic feet with the second row folded.
2018 Toyota CH-R XLE Premium Performance
The 2018 Toyota CH-R gets its power from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces a total of 144 horsepower with a peak torque of 139 lb-ft. Mated to a continuously variable transmission, the Toyota CH-R can run from zero to 60 mph in 11 seconds. Now, while those numbers won’t exhilarate you, the Toyota CH-R does offer a zippy drive in urban areas and really holds its territory on the highways. We had no gripes with the amount of power offered in this tiny subcompact crossover, especially when we popped it into Sport Mode.
Fuel economy wise, the 2018 Toyota CH-R gets an EPA-rating of 27/31 mpg* (city/highway) with a combined mpg* of 29.
Overall, we were pretty impressed with the ride quality of the Toyota CH-R and at no point were left wanting more than this vehicle has to offer.
2018 Toyota CH-R XLE Premium Safety
Here is where things get a little more interesting. The 2018 Toyota CH-R comes standard with the Toyota Sense P driver asset technology options which means you get a lot more than a backup camera and sensors. The Toyota CH-R also comes standard with blind spot monitoring, pre-collision warning, active braking, radar-guided cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, and automatic high beam.
2018 Toyota CH-R XLE Premium Overall
Overall, if you’re in the market for a compact sedan, but need something that rides a little higher and offers more utility, then the Toyota CH-R is one subcompact crossover you should definitely check out. It offers the perfect balance of style and utility with a long list of standard features and enough power to make you feel confident in all driving situations.
